Rogers Cable to limit bandwidth

Rogers Cable in Toronto is imposing a “combined upload and download bandwidth limit of 60 GB per month.” This goes into effect on March 17, 2005.

One person that I spoke to was told by Rogers that 60 GB of bandwidth is what the average person might use in a year. Another person I spoke to had his service cut off for a day last fall. He was told that he was in the 1% of users that was abusing the service by downloading excessively.

So what does this mean if you’re a bandwidth hog? It means that you’ll only be able to steal download about 60 Hollywood films each month or 15,000 songs.

Can you really watch 60 films or listen to 15,000 songs in a month? I think Rogers and the other ISPs are probably doing some people a favour by limiting their downloading addiction.

Downloading that much data becomes a full-time job of burning CDs, DVDs, printing cover art, archiving files and making room on your crippled hard drive for the next 60 GB of files. Where do people find the time to actually watch all of those movies and listen to all of that music? What kind of life can you possibly have if you spend all of your spare time in front of the computer or the television?

Match 17th to 31st is 15 days.... 60 gb in 15 days... I might go over!

What am I going to do next month????????

SuprAdam 03-27-2005 12:38 AM

Combine all the I download in class on the laptop and I easily use over 60gb's/month. Good ol' college broadband.

I think 60GB/month is extreamly fair

considering many people signed up for UMLIMITED rogers plans, seems kinda sketchy to put a cap on it.

but.. also check out IHATEROGERS

Not even guys
when i first got "highspeed"
i had the cable choice but i went sympatico knowing they had a 10gb month limit

now thats 120gb/year for neone who can do math here so trust me sympatico is worth it, not to mention the 150% upgrade in download and 100% upgrade in upload i got for free :D no complaints here

2tone_93gt 03-27-2005 12:20 PM

i agree, 60 gigs is plenty per month, and even VoIP doesnt require that much BW.

I would expect more companies to follow suit with the capping.

i hate sympatico high speed with a passion, not only is it inconvenient (have to always connect/sign on) but the bandwith that you do get is a joke, i think on average i was getting 30-40kb/s download speeds. roger's on the other hand is simply the best value if you want great bandwith, i'm getting 500-600kb/s downloads and 70-80kb/s upload for 40 bux a month, which may sound like a lot, but when you're downloading 700mb dvd rips, it makes a BIG difference.

and i'd have to agree with most people, yes, they are restricting/capping your usage, but 60gb's a month is pretty generous for most people even if you download a lot of big files like i do

2tone_93gt 03-27-2005 12:51 PM

Sympatico cant keep up. Been there and done that. Rogers has a pretty sweet monopoly :knock_tee

goneinsixtyseconds 03-27-2005 12:54 PM

oh, and i just checked out that 'i hate rogers' site and the suggested alternatives by the author is a joke as well ...

"DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is the high-speed Internet access that utilizes existing copper telephone lines that are in place in your home. DSL can offer T1- like speeds up to 40 times faster than a 28.8Kbps modem. DSL is based on a digital signal which can squeeze much more capacity out of a copper phone line than an analog modem will. Our alternatives on these pages refer to DSL as "High Speed (Phone Line)"."

wow, "40 times faster than a 28.8 modem"? that's a whopping 112 kb/s bandwith as opposed to getting 500-600 which i have with roger's extreme ...

i figure the selection of providers can go either way, i know lots of people who hate rogers because of their previous connectivity problems, but i've had nothing but good experiences with them, and swear by their high speed service

BrowNKiD 03-27-2005 12:56 PM

60GBs a monthin is way to little if u dl movies. In jan i upload/downloaded almost 4X more than the new limit. Im thinking about switching to dsl.

Young gun 03-27-2005 01:25 PM

ummm i dunno what u guys r talkin about i dunt connect with
im connected 24/7 with router and my download speeds off an average server are around 400kbps and upload at somethign like 100 kbps but meh to each his own :sly:

NOTORIOUS VR 03-27-2005 01:59 PM

I think if you go over 60 GB a month and are complaining about it... you should have to pay for more...

Other then that... get a life and go outside for a few days.

... some people don't even have 60 GB hard drives....

The average is what... 80-120 GB for HD's? so how can u ing DL 60 GB per month in movies?!? That's such bullshit.

98z24 03-27-2005 02:10 PM

Are there any programs out there that measure your total DL or UP volume over any given period of time?

I am interested in figuring out what my weekly/monthly usage is.

Young gun 03-27-2005 03:04 PM

ur provider website should tell u lol ^

Strokerace 03-27-2005 03:07 PM

Yes, if you go to rogers site and check your usage, it will tell you. You can also search Google for bandwidth monitor to.

on a side note, I have already used up over 48gigs this month and have only download a few movies and about 30 songs.

98z24 03-27-2005 03:14 PM

Thanks.

I just checked...

40gigs Uploaded, 20gigs Downloaded.

...that is no where NEAR what I had assumed... :thumbsup

Though I don't disagree with the first line...

To DL a movie, it's less than 4.5gb, and the movie's still less than 4.5gb when extracted.
Really, to comfortably DL/burn movies, 40gb is plenty. It's when you start storing them that you run into space issues.

don't people download divx'd movies? who actually download's full dvd vob's which come out to be 4.5gb's?

i download LOTS of divx'd car vids (which come out to be roughly 700mb's per vid), and i'm still under the 60gb bandwith limit

spawnr 03-27-2005 09:24 PM

Canada is changing copyright laws and signing international agreements. Soon, ISPs will log users who have high bandwith report the activity to music/movie companies.

There will be lawsuits by recording company's against individuals, just like in the states.

Maybe rogers picked 60 gb as the threshold limit for reporting?

98z24 03-27-2005 09:28 PM

Do you have a source for that info?

Youngdubber 03-27-2005 11:09 PM

How does this work..if I'm playing ps2 online..is that using up part of my 60gig bandwidth allowance? Because really..surfing..downloading the odd porn(odd as in ever so often not midgets with screwdrivers and bottled water), ps2 online and msn is all I use internet for.

I guess people do still DL Divx movies :)

ricewagon94 03-27-2005 11:44 PM

Hmmmm

I have to admit, when i first signed on with Rogers it was because of the Sympatico limit fiasco. I was pissed about it. Now that Rogers is following suit, I was mixed in reactions. At first i was pissed, but I stopped and thought about how much I really download. Most of my movies are ripped using dvd shrink, done in about 3 hours. Works for me. So i guess it is ok, for now. So long as my sister in law doesn't visit too often and get freaky on limewire... (biatch!)

If I can find a movie that has the full DVD vob's I will download that instead of the DivX versions for one reason: Dolby Digital 5.1....

It's the sound that makes the movies.. and if you have a system that is 5.1 it makes the movie just that much more enjoyable.

i suppose, but i wouldn't have the patience to wait for a 4.5 gb movie to download, even if i'm getting great download speeds of 500-600 kb/s which is rare for sources like bitorrent or even private ftp's

From The Canadian Press

TORONTO — Those who enjoy swapping music, books and movies online may want to reconsider.

The federal government inched closer Thursday to cracking down on file sharing by announcing several proposed amendments to the Copyright Act.

The changes would include the signing of two World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) treaties and forcing Internet service providers to keep records of those who share high volumes of copyright-protected material such as songs, Hollywood movies and TV shows.

The amendments would "clarify that the unauthorized posting or the peer-to-peer file-sharing of material on the Internet will constitute an infringement of copyright,'' say documents released jointly Thursday by Canadian Heritage and Industry Canada.

"It will also be made clear that private copies of sound recordings cannot be uploaded or further distributed.''

The reforms, which will be introduced in the House of Commons later this spring, would give the music industry greater power to stop such behaviour through the courts via lawsuits. Currently, it is not illegal in Canada to upload material to programs like Kazaa and BearShare.

"Clearly, once we get implementation there'll be no doubt . . . it'll be illegal to engage in unauthorized file-sharing,'' said Graham Henderson, who heads the Canadian Recording Industry Association, which represents the country's record labels.

Adding Canada's name to the list of 50 countries already using the WIPO treaties would make it illegal to distribute and trade music online.

It would also become a crime to remove or circumvent copyright protections on CDs.

The amendments also ask that ISPs such as Rogers, Shaw and Bell "play a role in curbing the misuse of their facilities for copyright infringement.''

ISPs would have to notify subscribers when illegal activity is detected via their Internet connection. They would also be required, as is the case in the United States and parts of Europe, to keep a log of such warnings in case of a lawsuit _ although a court order would be needed to make the names and addresses known to prosecutors.

In pre-committee meetings the copyright amendments were approved by all political parties.

The Hidden Bandwidth Cap

Here is the Sneaky part that Rogers and Bell don't tell you.

ISP's cap Bandwidth per Port aswell. Certain Download Heavy progrmas, such as limewire, bearshare, and Torrents use certain ports exclusively.

I beleive some of the more common ports are 60, 88, 90. etc (i can't remember right now what they all are)

So what the ISP's do is limit how much BW goes through those ports to each user, effectively limiting your download and upload speeds through these port. College and University Campuses are notorious for limiting these ports in a very Nazi style way.

dvd movies are about 4gb. Plus the sites i get them from release them like a week or two before they are released in stores. So the site requires your to upload at least as much as your download. And i have 2x200gb HD. And i dont site infront of my computer all day. I jus click and let it download. :D

Viperoni 03-28-2005 05:06 PM

-James- 03-28-2005 11:12 PM

Hrm, monopoly?

If anything right now it's an oligopoly what with there being Rogers, Sympatico, and Cogeco.

Rogers being the worst of all 3 of course.
