So do any of you own a ps3?
 

I just want some opinions on how it is...especially without an HDTV. I'm trying to justify getting one, and they're starting to flood the ads on Craigslist at some reasonable prices. Of course, I'm still holding back because I heard that these next gen systems are somewhat letdowns on normal tv's (and I'm not about to drop 1200 bucks on a new tv), but with guitar hero 3, rock band, and gta 4 coming up it's awfully tempting.

...and no I'm not looking into xbox...I just don't want one I guess :)

they should be doing an update soon (Christmas is coming, and what do they do every year for the holidays?) I am getting one, but I have an HDTV on it's way (thank you lightning) when I have seen them hooked up in stores it's to a cheap 20 inch tube tv (not hd) and they look pretty good, now if you have a big screen it may not look as good as there is more information that really shows how bad a standard def tv is

The next gen systems look 'okay' on SD/EDTVs. I mean, they look a million times better than the PS2s and Xbox Ones, that's for sure.

The letdown for the PS3 are the games, or lack thereof. There aren't that many good games for it yet. Madden '08 doesn't run smoothly at all (crap is an accurate description), the lighting effects in Rainbow Six Vegas are toned down, Splinter Cell doesn't look great at all. PS3 has really had a lot of things go wrong for it. It's a pain in the testicles to develop for, and nothing has made this more public than the delay of GTA:IV until early 2008... production delays caused by the PS3 port.

If you're looking for a Blu-Ray player that just so happens to play games once in a while, get the PS3. If you're looking for a gaming console that plays HD-DVDs for $149 more, bite the bullet and get the Xbox 360.

I always try to talk my friends out of them if they want to get one. Honestly, its a computer more than a game console imo, and I already have one of those. I just dont see any real advantage they have with anything... the game lineup sucks, I heard many of the systems are having problems with at least one thing, and theyre more expensive. Thats why Im going with a 360... but you dont want one... or do you...? :laugh:

I personally would spend the money on a better tv first. Theres no need to get a next gen system if you're not going to take care of the next gen features. It's like a girl getting fake and then never leaving the house to show them off. Doesn't make any sense.

just think of the ps3 as the gto of the gaming world, powerful, such a big hype, yet a huge let down

Give it some time. The 360 didn't really have much for games it's first year either.

Gran Turismo 5 will probably be what makes me buy one in the future. That series made me buy the last 2 playstations.

lol, I love your analogy. And I agree, GT is a sweet game... I own 2-4, but to me theyre getting old, I can still go back and play the older ones, its just the graphics that get better, and they add some new cars. But Ill never ever beat one haha.

As per the GTO theory... Only difference is the people who wanted to buy the ps3s werent 75 year old men who were upset because the design didnt look like an atari.

i want to get one only beacause i love my PS2 and have never had an issue plus we just got a 52 inch HDTV so yeah i think it would look pretty on that

I have like a 56" HDTV, but one of the lighting fixtures in the TV is out so it makes gaming impossible because its so dark...blahh

what's funny is all the magazines I get (trade, and home and car audio) says get the ps3 if you want a blu ray player, if you want an hd dvd player get an hd dvd player not the 360 (the player for it is horrible)

Big ol' BS-flag right here. There is nothing wrong with the HD-DVD player for the X360. People were having issues with the Children of Men HD-DVD, but that's since been fixed. If you're rockin' an Xbox 360 with the HDMI (they all have it now), you can get the 5.1 Dolby/DTS.

AND I can use it on my PC too.

Yeah I was just reading about them last night, I hear theyre pretty decent. I read up on hd-dvd. Doesnt seem too bad, I still wouldnt buy one.

hmm, your opinions gave me much to think about...I don't like the idea of having a ps3 without an hdtv (especially since in a few years cable will be all hd, thus almost requiring one) so it gives me the thought that I should get the tv first....but regardless I still want a ps3 because though the start is slow for the platform, I have faith that sony will keep it's third party developers, and good games will come.

still if I can find the right deal at the right price, it might not be a bad deal

...the mention of gta4 got me looking at wikipedia and I gotta say, it's pretty disappointing to read some of the features (and the delay)
