Who knows about dj stuff?

I got myself a copy of fruity loops about 2 months ago..yeah I know its like the most basic thing out there but Ive been chopping up songs with edision and having a lot of fun. Im just wondering how djs like premier and green lantern do it with turntables, and if its an expensive thing to start off with.

Do what with turntables? Most of the guys out there including myself(house Dj with some hip hop) use serato or torq when they spin live as this way u dont have to log your crate of records around. U can use fruity loops with your lap top mixed in with a turntable or cdj, for sample triggers or on the fly remixing, however ableton live is a bit better for that. U dont actually create the beats using a turntable or a CDJ, they are only play back or controll devices if they are used with sync and time code media.

Fruity loops is mainly designed for in the studio loop production. For my productions(www.msequence.com) I prefer to use Cubase SX rewired with ableton and Reason. Also what exactly do you want to do when you play live? Do you want to on the fly remix, or produce traxx in the studio? I will be spinning at CSCS(www.cscs.ca) Oct5 in cayuga come by and chat production or djing if you like :) See you there.

yea fruity loops is pretty basic. if u want a more user friendly spinning program u can get virtual dj, which is wat dj dannny d uses on z103, and actually many others as well. theres many diffferent ways to spin when ur spinning live, 2 deck 2 cdjs and a laptop is prime. i know james zabelia uses a beat machine while he spins, ****ing sick. for music making programs i use reason2 or serato like buddy said. dunno wut kinda music u listen to but some programs are more for hip hop and some like house.

Serato is not a music making program its a music triggering program, it allows you to use timcode vinyl or cds to trigger tracks via a control device like a turntable, cd player, keyboard of course with time code vinyl or cd.. so you can play off your lappy.... lol there is a difference... u dont actually make music with a dj program you dj it!!!

Danny d hehe lol.. yeah virtual dj is great if you like the program to auto beat match lol .. than again when he does his live at 5 mixes they are pre mixed so for time saving virtual dj is great tool, but for live its boring as hell if you auto beatmatch hehe !!!

Totally man .. reason 4 is great.. it will teach you the basics of:

1. sequencing
2. different types of effects
3. different types of instruments - drum machines, synths, samplers

and how to put it all together to make a track. Its a good start.

Does anyone know where I can find a cheap midi keyboard?

msequence 10-14-2008 09:10 PM

Long & Mcquade

Go for midiman stuff. its budget price but it works well.... some thing with 49 keys or 25 keys and some knobs to control midi data would do the trick.. eg. if you want to play with resonant filter or the envelope for some cool analogue filtered effects.

Peace
