XP Pro System Restore
 

I want to do a system restore on my laptop. I have the file saved on a CD and I don't know how to get it to restore from it.

what kind of laptop is it? most times you dont need a cd. just use the built in recovery partition. before it boots into windows just hit F11 (may be different on yours) and then it will start up the recovery

if its an hp or compaq - youre in luck....theirs work perfect
emachine or gateway - your odds are 20/80 at best if it will go thru
toshiba - generally doesnt have a recovery partition, theyre cool and give you discs
and finally sony- well sonys are BA cause you can usually start the recovery within windows

Gateway generally requires you to make recovery CD/DVDs.
Toshiba is awesome, because yes, you get recovery DVDs.

Sony isn't all that great... sure, it's alluring to be able to start the recovery within Windows... but what if you can't load Windows...? Then you're back to the old way.

Most likely, boot into a restore mode, and load it off your cd. Unless Im assuming you have tried running it straight from the cd? If not, look for the quick F-number into the boot/recovery options during your inital bios load.

I know I don't need a CD but the guy that sold it to me saved a system restore start point on the CD and I would like to use that to put it back to where it was to fix a problem that's come up.
When I try to do the system restore it, it just brings up one last Saturday but nothing before that and it won't let me go back before Jan. of this year.

Oh I see.. Yeah Im not sure how you snag that restore point off a cd and get it into the correct directory. I supposed you would have to know where the restore points are kept, then drag that file into there maybe? :ne_nau: that would be my best guess.

That's what I was thinking but I have no idea where it's at.

I found where the restore .exe file is gut nothing with the old files needed.

The CD has three files on it. two are V2I files (Ones 2GB's and ones 475MB's), then there's a SV2i file that's 2.39MB's.

I havent even heard of those formats before... sorry Im no help to you :(
