Even format hardrives can be recovered.

There is a reason the Canadian Government demands that any Hard Drives in PC's being returned/Retired from service are placed through a "Physical Drive Erasure" meaning that someone takes the Hard Drive and Drills about 50-75 Holes through it with a drill press.

The only way short of that, that Data is ever actually gone is by being over written by another piece of data, and even then pieces can still be put back together. Which is why CAN/US DOD standards are 7 Passes over 100% of the hard drive with 3 Level overwrites.

Some people call them paranoid, but I have seen what sort of lengths people will go to try to hide illegal Data, and what needs to be done to recover it.

There are plenty of products out their that will recover anywhere upwards of 90% of your files (as long as you have not overwritten the data already)

These products will even allow you to recover data on partition tables that have been completely invalidated (Don't ask me how I know, LOL)

recovering deleted files

yes there is!! even if your hard disk crashed or formatted you still can recover your stuff (sometimes its barely recognizable though! =P)
Get your hands on some reliable software like Ontrack Easy Recovery Professional to recover lost files from a formatted drive or files that were deleted by mistake.
