Windows VISTAS: Disscuss

I know Microsoft right now is dependin on this program.. and spent like 7 Billion dollars to make it.. but they're 300 Billion dollar company... But lets talk tech..

What do you think is good and bad bout Windows Vistas... is it a resource hog?? Runs slower then XP on slower machine???

Right now there are no advantages to be running Vista other then it's eye candy. And there are probably certain programs that will not work with Vista as it's completely a new OS, and wasn't built on top of XP (NT).

I decided to ditch XP because I could... I don't run any legacy software. I've gamed on Vista and it works just fine as well.

Install it on an extra drive/partition and see how you like it and if you can make the switch now... if not.. dual boot (which is kinda gay IMO) or wait.

Can it handle more programs being open without killing resources?

i like the auto glass wheel and the new ie7 (in spite of its [ie7] compatibilty bugs and all) the ability to tab surf vs the conventional surfing style i find is quite useful during research, musc management, and yes porn. the ability to scroll through windows like theyre part of one giant 3d desktop rolodex is pretty cool. the bad part about the vista series.... and yes i do mean series is that its selective of all the features based on what type or version of vista you get

ultimate

autoglass, widgets, media centre the whole shabang

Premium

widgets, media centre and standard features

Enterprise/Professional

updated project, outlook and a new meeting manager (video conferencing ready)

home

basic media centre and widgets nothing special really

i dont know how many of you saw the leaked microsoft canada prices but they are way cheaper to start than the xp was when it first came out (1000) based on the version of vista you want to buy the price is matched accordingly. the memo estimates that were leaked suggested 250-550 pending on the version you plan to purchase ....aaahem bootleg what ev, im not here to judge you

I don't' understand what your asking here...

Vista on it's own uses more resources then XP as I mentioned previously. After that it's program specific on use of your available resources.

I've been running the Vista RC1/2 (64bit) for about 3 months. I tried to install the RTM couple weeks ago, it actually made my computer instable for some reason. And I am back running XP PRO SP2 32bit.

I think Vista is a much improved OS over XP in every single way. It is much much faster than XP too. Some say it's instable, but from my first hand experience it is no less stable than XP I am running right now. Looks much prettier too.

It has improved searching capabilities. Full Disk encryption. Direct X 10 which wont help you unless you have a DX 10 card which are very expensive right now, not to mention no games support it yet.

Far more annoying to install software but should stop some idiots from accidently installing viruses.

Cons - More resource intensive. annoying install feature. Annoying activations. XP does most of everything needed other than DX10 games.

Having used MacOSX, I think the search on Vista is still awfully slow.

It might be more resource intensive, but it is only because it is able to manage all of the resource more efficiently. On the XP, I feel most of my 2GB are wasted, but on Vista, I feel I can benefit from having even more memory. XP is just very inefficient in terms of memory management.

Fair enough. I get a free copy of Vista Ultimate from Retail Edge so personally I can't wait till I get my retail version of it to try it out and see how much has changed under the hood. Wasn't planning on buying it anytime soon but free copy of the full package. Can't complain.
