well seeing it was designed, along with the 300 and magnum, by a german guy, its not all that american. theres a lot of parts taken from the benz in these cars, more then many people think. i can understand people saying "omg, its a 4 door, its a disgrace" but its the name chrysler went with, what can you do
and its not just a magnum with a chopped rear. exterior wise, the charger carries almost nothing in common with either of the other LX cars. it has that similar looking dodge crosshair grill, but headlights and much else is very much different
bringing it as a 4 door has its reasons. being 2 doors, this car would have to compete in pretty much different segment, in which i dont think it would fare well. at the plant, i dont think it would be easy to make the change over to a 2 door body style. the charger was brought out in a surprisingly short period of time, from the time they announced ideas to when it came down the line for the first time
charger also fills a unique part of the fleet car segment. DC doesnt want to let the 300 go as cop and taxi use, and the magnum wasnt the perfect choice for those applications either. afaik, we already build some magnum police packages, but im willing to bet the charger will be the one to make the big splash with police and other fleet sales

the hemi's of old were inneficient gas guzzlers that had to go. these new motors have a lot of serious technology behind them, such as the variable displacement system, thats able to drop 4 cylinders, and put around on half the engine when just cruising to riding easy. the biggest motor we put in these things now is a 6.1 making a claimed 425hp. at the moment, its only found in the SRT8, but i think that is an impressive vehicle. for its weight, it is capable of mid to high 13 second passes, brakes are amazing, huge ceramic rotors with brembo calipers that dodge had to make custom 20" wheels to fit the brakes under. ive read a few reviews, and the 70-0 stopping distances were described as "near supercar territory", which isnt bad for a 4000lb+ luxo cruiser that is quite frankly, very affordable

personally, i cant wait to see the SRT8 parts trickle down to the charger. there is talk of making a 2 door version, so those naysayers might be silenced, especially if it comes in the form of 425hp+ 6.1 engine. keep in mind this new 6.1 makes just as much hp as the old 426 hemi of old, just cleaner and more efficient.

eitherway, if you dont appericiate this car in particular, you should appreciate what its doing. i think DC has really brought back the way american vehicles should be built. no more underpowered fwd v6 sedans with cheap construction. the v8 and rwd is back, something we can all appreicate

The car doesn't really look that bad....at first I really didn't like it but that changed after I saw the GoManGo Orange...the 6.1 Hemi is going to be a kick ass engine

Absolutely fukin hidieous
after the release of the GTO i thought maybe Dodge might release something "muscle car" style but that is just fukin discusting

ummm to be honest the person stating that this car has its own individual identity is crazy
This car shares the same suspension drivetrain and interior as the 300/MAGNUM and is not any different just its more retro fit to appeal to the younger crowd
Chryslers game plan
300 - business man family sedan clean and class
Magnum - Replacement for a Mini'van car ride height and stability with minivan room
Charger - 4 door practicality with all retro colours schemes like plum crazy purple etc to appeal to today's kids...I dont mind the car for what it is but in my own honest opinion
the nicest of the bunch has gotta be the magnum

there is nothing great about the hemi
it's at the bottom of the barrel as far as new american V8's go

dj_jake 02-27-2005 12:17 PM

feel free to elaborate why the new hemi is "bottom of the barrel"
there is a lot of hype, but guess what, the marketing behind it makes it probably one of the most popular v8's right now

Looks ugly, but the Porsche is beautiful.
