Drag Racing or Road Racing?
 

Man, I can't decide, so I thought I would incite some discussion for the hell of it. I love fast as hell drag-setup Mustangs, and it seems like a nice cheap way to get into the sport (relatively, cheap...)

But then I seriously love road/track racing, having an all-around awesome car, and having a bit more "technique" in my driving.

It looks like road racing would be a little bit more expensive to get into due to suspension components, brake upgrades, lapping days and lessons, not to mention tires, brake pads, etc.

Drag racing you get to the point of it all - unbridled acceleration. Which I love. I just wonder if I would be disappointed that I didn't get into road racing...

My car is stock, I can do anything with it :D

strive for the street car approach. I was content with the blower setup and suspension until i went turbo. Turbo seemed to push the car past the fun to drive on the street factor.
400 RWHP should be more than adequate on the street. Some nice stiff suspension, tq arm and panhard (they have dipped into single digits with them) and nice set of rims and rubber.

The stangs can be built to handle the twisties reasonably well. But then again, who can deny going straight as quick as you can... to each their own.

I started out with lowering springs, strut tower brace and full exhaust headers back... that was my start.

Hm, that's not such a bad idea... it may not be wise to get full into racing if I don't know what type of racing I want to do :D

Well, thats it... i mean when i started out i went with the basic mods that i think many mustang owners go with. My friends went with drag suspension and i went with more of touring type setup.
I always wanted a porsche killer in the twisties and enough HP to keep up to the big v8s.
I was really happy with the blower setup i had, the combination was nice. The blower let go after low KMs and i decided to go with the turbo setup. Drivability ruined the car in the end.

It no longer was fun to drive it. Im thinking of redoing one or the other, turbo or SC. That will be the street car. I dont need big power, just enough to let it hang, and some nice car audio... then maybe i will build a purpose built race car. Gut it, cut it and not feel bad.

Its hard to stop once youre bit.

I have some idea of your setup, but may I ask what made it unstreetable, or a pain compared to a supercharger? I was considering a 400+ horse turbo setup as opposed to an entry level supercharger with H/C/I. The funds shouldn't be an issue unless I have to get a built motor...

well, i ran on a 17" 99 gt pony rim with stock rubber. that was one problem. I ran the car tuned and detuned... majority of the time at 540 RWHP... car made 660RWHP...
even at 500+ i found when you got on it you fried.... and at that time i was already tired of investing money into the car, and tired of a few other engineering design issues with the kit.
i lost my ac, lost my ps. I never wanted to lose anything but with the 80 mm turbo setup i did lose those, that made me unhappy. I was becoming impatient, and i made foolish decisions. I hated parking. I hated driving during the day or on muggy nights... i ran with a down pipe only most of the time which made the car somewhat illegal ;) on the street and the fumes a bit much. I was getting 200KM a tank at 600+ HP.. which IMO i should have been getting 300+...
The car boogied, dont get me wrong. I managed to race a viper on the QEW and wow, i mean it moved...*i dont mean the viper*... I felt it lost the stang feel and had that I DRIVE A SUPRA ROLL ON RACE feel.. again, based on design. a t76 would have been perfect.

It wasn’t that it was turbo that ruined it for me, was more of a design and setup issue that did. Supercharger is far less complicated. Ive seen amazing YS kits with heads, upper and lowers with cog setups go for 4gs, that’s awesome… and that’s what I should have done, but I was convinced on the “I hate blowing blower belts”
Both have pros and cons, I just felt that when I ran SC the car was more ‘fun’ on the street.

Then depending on the shop having to tune the car also made it not fun. Its one thing to tune on a dyno, its another to have smooth power curves. The car just never felt right to me. After 20 passes on the dyno I essentially said to myself I will live with it…

i think road coarse would be really exciting too, i would love to do that. :)

well let put it this way i did the breaks and suspension first, then motor and well trans cause after i put the motor in i blew the trans twice in two weeks. i like high speeds and stopping and of course turns.

shifting gears, and hauling down a nice stretch of road still floats my boat. nothing like the feeling of pulling on somebody by a fender or totally blowing their doors off.

definately drag race is my choice because you need quickness, time control, and management in order to win .. since the race is shorter you have to work hard to win.

I am a personal fan of Road Racing. It is not all about luck, or about who has the fastest car, who puts the pedal to the metal first, but takes some skill to weave around the courses!

i was wondering though, how good could you make a mustang handle, like would it be good for auto xing?

I like 1320 the best!!!!!!! But I do enjoy watching both forms of Motorsport racing.

I have drag raced and street raced but i liked street racing more
i can feel more of a rush and excitement.Drag racing is to nerve recking.
Its like when are they going to turn the green light on.I mean i never liked that
kind of stuff.I lived on the street so i race on the street
