Matt...although a new civic is very safe...it would not have been enough for the crash......his crash was so bad the whole back end was pushed into the back seats....The civic woulda crumbled into him

Those fram connectors and body reinforcements saved his life...Solid steel welded plates...thats where the crash stopped...

And Randy...were glad ur hear to live and tell about it... :appl:

the civic has huge crumple zones that absorb the impact, i know crumple zones are a new concept to you but this is 2005. if you really think a 1985 couger is safer in a crash then a 2005 civic you're as dumb as your car is slow. altho a 1985 couger is safer then a 1985 civic thats for sure :thumbsup

I know its a write off.
Motor and drive train looks ok. I fired it up and got it to move in 1st and R but cant tell if axles are damaged or not with tires rubbing.

I took pics and racerrick took a vid of the car that i think he will post with background music, ( baby hit me one more time LOL )

btw i saw a turbo acura 1.6el pile into an 80s K car or some old piece of . Full on collision the guy was racing and going over 140kph. The acura was totalled beyond anything needless to say, the motor was in the passenger seat, the back end had spun into a pole and folded like an accordion. The driver had blood all over him, and they took him away on a strecher, the ambulance sped away to the hospital, i dunno what happened but the guy didnt look good. He was mangled.

The old lady in the K car got out, they layed her down probably for the sake of her neck. Anyway the car was bent, and also a write off but in no where near the crap that the acura was in No jaws of life nessessary to open that car, they just opened the door.

Anyway i had to stay around because it was almost right in front of my house and i was walking my dog so i saw everything.

crumple zones are great, air bags etc, but after i saw that accident i thought.. man those chrome steel bumpers they put on cars b4 actually do something.

and on the way home i thought about how glad i am to own a german car.

Sorry to hear about your car getting messed up. I know it hurts now (both your back and the car) it is better the car took most of the impact. Just be thankful that you were in such an 80's boat and not an older compact car.

Judging from the picture you can pull just about everything out except the stereo and some exhaust. For sure the frame is bent but thats probably because that's what absorbed most of the impact.

I hope you recover fast and have as much fun with your next car as you had with this one.

It is you who is dumb if you think that crumple zones will make a difference in all conceivable accidents. Also crumple zones have been around for decades and are not the recent innovation you believe they are as the Cougar in question has them as well.

To rate the survivability of an occupant in a 1985 Cougar and a 2005 Civic should both get in a head-on collision. Any engineer with half a brain in his head would choose the Cougar as the car to be in. Weight wins every time.
