$2000-2500 To spend what car??

Looking into changing cars. If you had $2000-2500 to spend on a used car what would you buy and why? Im looking for reliable, fun to drive, Has to have back seats for kids, and upgradablity performance and body wise. I was thinking VW as I really dont like rice that much. And I am sick and tired of all domestics having tranny, and engine problems. An ideas whould be great.

Thanks for the input.

Cheers

vw are expensive to repair.

4 door civic is where its at

S.Smartass 07-24-2006 07:59 PM

Are you off your rocker?!!?!? Your killing me. I SAID FUN!!!

rabbitman 07-24-2006 08:47 PM

I know where there is a MK3 VR for around $4000. In very good shape, it's been to the road course a few times, but it's very well looked after. Personally, I think the VR is a great motor, but parts are expensive. If you want fun, quick, reliable, get a mid 90's GTI 2l 16v. Great motor, tons of aftermarket for it, and it's easy to get over 200 hp with a turbo.:smilie_da

Stang6589 07-25-2006 08:45 AM

Your not gonna get much of a car in that price range. I agree with 2Tone on this one.

mr.mitsu 07-25-2006 08:47 AM

i have a colt gt (1.6 turbo) for sale if you're interested...

S.Smartass 07-25-2006 01:32 PM

Well I just found out my wife is finally ok with me switching cars. I found a couple of Ford Probe GT's (Madza) V6 but she is telling me it has to be an AUTO!! How am I suppose to feel cool in a AUTOMATIC?? So far in my price range we have the following:

Ford Probe GT 94-95
94 VW Passat VR6

Any of these any good?

I'll take the Passat VR6 off your hands, but it's only worth about $20.

I would go for an older 240

wacKo 07-25-2006 05:49 PM

If Iwas to choose between the passat and the probe, id go with the probe gt,

if not those then go with rabbitmans suggestion:

fun, quick, reliable, get a mid 90's GTI 2l 16v. Great motor, tons of aftermarket for it, and it's easy to get over 200 hp with a turbo.
:smilie_da

btw thats what ill be looking for once my truck is dealt with

S.Smartass 07-25-2006 07:11 PM

So your saying the passat is worth $20 is this correct and not to get one?

rabbitman 07-25-2006 08:06 PM

No, I was joking. The B3 Passat, with the OBD1 VR6, is a VERY sought after car. They generally go for around $1500, IF you can find one. The OBD1 still has a distributor, instead of coil pack, and is way more reliable than the coil pack VR6. However, you won't be impressed with the auto. Honestly, I wouldn't waste my money on a VR6 auto. You'd be way better off with the 5 speed. 4 cyl auto's aren't too bad, but gutless.

S.Smartass 07-25-2006 08:52 PM

Unfortunatly thats not an option as my wife may have to drive it (Dont say teach her stick) and has informed me it has to be auto. SO now what?

S.Smartass 07-25-2006 09:36 PM

What about a Beretta??

sickgsx 07-25-2006 09:47 PM

Wanna supercharged bonneville?? Not the most sporty but goes pretty good

S.Smartass 07-25-2006 10:01 PM

I was thinking about it but it was a little over priced from what I saw on Autotrader.

sickgsx 07-25-2006 10:07 PM

$1800 is over priced?? maybe for a non supercharged one and I guarante not in half a good of shape as mine. But whatever you want man I was just trying to suggest something over a beretta:thumbsdow

rabbitman 07-25-2006 10:08 PM

If it absolutley has to be an auto, my wife has a 94 Jetta CL 1.8l 8v auto with air. Not a bad car, but get up and go is not the best. On the highway, though, pretty nice ride.

See I know I should not have said anything. Im not trying to offen you there is a ssei on there 1 year newer then yours for $1000 and for $1200 more your into a 96. Im not trying to be an ass. Hell I bought my Intrepid for $6000 two years ago. Cause it had 90,000km on it. Now it has 120,000km on it and autotrader says I should see around $3000-3500 but I think in reality I will see $2500-2800 to be honest. Im not disin your ride dude. By any means. Please dont take it that way. And I also dont know if I want to go from a 96 to a 92.

sickgsx 07-25-2006 10:48 PM

You also have to take in the fact they may be cheaper but they also will have way more k than mine. Did you notice on those two cars that you are talking about they left out how many k they have?? when they leave out the kilometers it means its normally pretty high. There is zero wrong with my car I am only selling because I have 4 other cars. I wasn't offended at all just trying to give you some idea's, Good luck with your search

Fresh_Prince 07-27-2006 10:03 PM

in that price range and out of all these cars i would go for a 92-93 accord or
the g2 tegra gsr there is many of for that price range out there so finding one in good shape wouldn't be hard.

Exipse 08-22-2006 06:03 PM

I'm going to agree with 2toneGt. A 4 door honda civic or accord seems like your best bet.

It's absolutely unreasonable to expect a sporty, family car, with automatic transmission that you find "fun" - under $2000.

You're going to have to sacrifice what you want - the sporty, fun, component for what you apparently need - a family car that your wife can drive too.

EveryMn 08-23-2006 10:59 PM

Tell your wide you want a divorce.

pg29 08-24-2006 01:44 AM

for that price range you could get a third gen camaro/trans am, or a fox body mustang. even tho they'd be autos, with a V8 they'd still be fun.

Sebasano 01-06-2007 09:37 PM

You can usually get talons for $2g's. Fun package is that the auto's use a cave man style triptronic. You'll be switching gears by shifting from 1 to 2 for each gear

1>1 2>2 1>3 2>4.

Or find an old suburaru legacy...awd is always fun.

90TLAD3 02-17-2008 01:23 AM

theres a omni glh for sale on here. http://www.gtcars.ca/online/domestic-vehicles/47128-1986-omni-glh-sale.html

Firm 02-18-2008 12:43 AM

GTP...If you can find one in range. If not 92-ish Accord, or a late 90's protege.

Default User 03-08-2008 03:58 PM

An older 4-door Golf - 93 to <99 - same body style

Not sure why everyone thinks that VW are that much more expensive to repair.....as long as you know where to get your parts, and a reliable mechanic - it's not that much different than any other import.
Now unless you go for stealership for parts only - then yes, it's more expensive. However, pass by Frisco's or other aftermarket OE replacement part shops, and the prices start to level off.

Now considering it is for your wife - and it's going to be an automatic car - I would get the CL.
600+ km's on a full tank when driven and maintained properly. These can be found in autotrader, kijij, or even vortex, easily within your budget.

n1gro 04-10-2008 11:10 PM
