k so i went back and got the other engine and it turned out to be a sbc 350 4 bolt main. wooot. it needs to be rebuilt but i might just get all the parts for it first and see how it runs. all i need is heads, intake, carb. i was talking to my friend about it. he said to make sure i get all 87-92 parts for it. that would make it centerbolt (its an 80-85 style block btw) Im wondering if he is right and this will work as good as he said. he said something about the angle of the heads being different like 17 degrees compared to 45 degrees. so those of youe who know what im talking about give me some input on what parts i should get to complete this motor. thanks everyone

I think he's thinking vortec style heads, but as long as the intake matches you can put any gen 1 heads on (gen II is the lt1 engines)

might wanna look into a whole performance package from say, edelbrock. it will include cam, valvetrain components, heads, intake and carb and lots of other things youll need and they are usually matched up to perform very well. prolly a simpler solution for someone like you instead of trying to build something with mismatched parts, which isnt necesarrily bad, but with this there is no guess work as long as you can build a nice solid bottom end.

first thing i would do it take it to a machine shop, get it hot tanked and see if everything checks out. just to make sure.

great advice, holley, edelbrock, summit and jegs all have kits that work well for heads, cam and intake. I did a suburban with an edelbrock kit, and once I got rid of the edelbrock carb it pulled the front tires (was only a little bit, but it did do it)

we did ahve alot of edelbrock stuff on the 305 and it was nice

thanks for all the help guys. if i do decide to keep it i will have the whole bottom end redone and probly get a top end kit like you said. my friend is giving me a 87 350 2 bolt main and the walls are like brand new and it has heads and an edelbrock performer manifold on it already so we will see what happens.

You can get 87+ top end, but you need the correct year bottom end parts. Your block has a 2-piece rear main, where the 87+ have a one piece. Honestly I would almost stick with the older style heads. Performance rockers are a little cheaper, as are nice aftermarket valve covers.

If you want to build a nice motor, look at a nice balanced bottom end package from Summit. If you are going to just build a nice street motor- a cast crank should be enough for you. You have to be realistic when building your motor. Of course everyone would love to run boost or nitrous 'some-day' but realistically most people don't end up doing it. If you are pretty sure you will just build a nice street motor, stick with realistic parts. You don't need $600 rods, $800 pistons or a $2,000 crank.

You can get a nice 383 balanced assembly from Summit for under a $1,000. Combine that with a nice top-end kit for around $1500 and you will have a nice motor putting down 450hp no problem.

But you also have to realize that there will be probably another $1,000 in machine work and at least another grand getting other various things for it.

Add it all up and for around $3,500 you can have a nice motor. Others will say it can be done cheaper, and it probably could. If you troll around Ebay you might be able to find better deals, but I'm not a fan of cheaping out on internal engine parts.

my friend has the 350 b/c he pulled it out of his iroc. he put in some other motor (dont remember what). i cant tell you how i got my engines and transmissions ;)
