Anyone ever swap out the stereo in a Lumina (96+)??

I just got a '99 Lumina and I'm swapping my deck from my old car into this one, but it's the darndest thing...I don't know how to get the front dash cover off. The only thing I could find online was someone who said it was doable by just prying at the corners with a screwdriver until it pops out....although this may be the case when I gently attempted to all I got was bending and flexing of the plastic and the last thing I want to do is crack it.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm assuming some disassembly of the dash is necessary, but not sure where.

Thanks for the time and consideration :)

not positive on that year, but the earlier ones ('97-98) were just metal clips holding the whole thing, it should pull away enough to get a glimpse behind though

i swapped out my 99 i can't look for the instructions now but i will tell you later tonight

Camaroguy18 08-28-2007 09:09 PM

well i got things mostly wired up except there were a few extra wires from the car that had nothing to go to, including an extra pair of light and dark green wires. Thing is, now my speedometer will not work...is there a wire within that loom that would affect it?

paarman97maro 08-28-2007 09:25 PM

lol I hope not.. that would be crazy.

archemedes 08-28-2007 11:46 PM

that shouldn't be hooked to the stereo on that year (that's the 2006 models that do that) did you hack it or use a harness?

ITSA6 08-28-2007 11:51 PM

With the harness it should all be plain and simple however my car would not start or do anything if you didn't have the radio completely hooked up to it

archemedes 08-29-2007 01:14 AM

the '04 right? Taurus was one of the first american cars to use the asian hookups (databus) there are special adapters for that now

ITSA6 08-29-2007 09:01 AM

i was talkin about my 99 lumina. you can't put aftermarket anything in a Taurus

hmm well this has me baffled....I'm going to try and get near the speedo this afternoon and see if something is loose

ITSA6 08-29-2007 04:33 PM

you shouldn't of had to do anything near the speedo or any wires controling it. does the car start at all?

Camaroguy18 08-30-2007 12:36 AM

yea the car starts and runs fine...the cd player works fine except i mixed up the memory and regular 12v wires so the settings keep getting reset.

The trip and odometer don't work as well...

ITSA6 08-30-2007 12:38 AM

wow i really don't get how you even messed with those wires. you've done radios before. i was only 14 when i swapped out the radio in my lumina. just trying to firgure out how you did that. and the trip odometer only never worked in my camaro when i unplugged something but that was when i was swapping my gauges so i have no clue on that one either

Camaroguy18 08-30-2007 04:36 PM

yea i've done plenty of radios before....like I said I've never had extra wires from the factory harness with nothing to connect to the aftermarket before either.

Today when I was driving it up to John's auto, I noticed that the bass in the song was moving the speedometer and to a lesser extent, the odometer and tripometer....not long after my 'volts' light came on...so I'm shorting something here....I'm taking the whole deck out now and hopefully it'll keep the battery from draining until I can get it in to Bestbuy....I'm thinking it would be best to have a shop do it
