BOV not blowing off

Have a 02 subaru WRX, put a turbo smart BOV on it just over a year ago....I know that replacing the factory BOV basically loses me power but im not too worried about it...its not that much anyway...i like the sound... :D ricer! ......Anyways, havent done anything else to the engine/turbo...anyways i was driving home and suddenly i stopped getting the Blow off factor...no noise... :smilie_d0 turbo still feels like its pushing but no sound when i let off gas....i was listening closely and it sounds like a second or two after I let off gas where it would normally blow theres a very faint pop pop pop pop almost like back firing (coming from engine compartment area, not rear of car.) ...its not very loud thou....

so is my valve seized or is it something else? im planning on taking it in to dealer when i can cause its still covered under warranty :smilie_da but im busy with work and can only really press bringing it in if its serious....other wise if i find out its the BOV itself i'll just throw the factory one back on....plz help ...thx

Put your stock one back on asap and visit the dealer...

Vacuum line for it come off?

Do you have a boost gauge? What pressure was it before this happened and what pressure now?

No BOV would just get 100% stuck closed and make NO sound. It must be fluttering or you have a boost problem and aren't building any.

Anyways pull that thing off and inspect it and I would put the stock BOV on, you have no need for the other one really...

If somehow you are still building boost and its not blowing off AT ALL you are seriously damaging the turbo. Don't go in to boost at all.

i hate it when that happens :( replace it with the old one

you could try putting a loonie or a washer to tighten the spring
but if theres no chattering then you have to worry about spinning the turbo

mikeness 05-04-2006 10:37 AM

Sounds like BOV isnt opening an teh chi chi chi sound you are hearing is compresser surge. (throttle body closes, compressed air goes back into the turbo and makes it spin the other way... bad for turbo)

Check your vaccum line thats hooked up to the bov, or try loosen it.

take it off take it apart and clean it and look at the seals in it you mite need to replace them and then change the vacuum line that gos to it

my friend had the same bov and his wasent working eather.. the reason....i diafram inside a little rubber piece that works like the diafram was ripped and the bov didnt work

Check the vacuum line. Its important that you have a functioning BOV or you may damage your turbo.

if its adjustable check what setting u have it on

if it's a cheapie ebay BOV, the diaphram could have failed...
I'm not sure if Forge makes one for your app. but they use pistons and their BOV/DV are bullit proof...

YellowCavy 09-12-2006 12:45 AM

exactly why you dont go cheap with turbo parts.

if its a good one, take it back and see if its under warranty, it may be defective.

NOTORIOUS VR 09-12-2006 11:57 AM

regardless, or cheap or not.... I've seen Turbosmart BOV's seize up...

You just need to do maintenance... I mean, you people just think that will take care of itself? There's more to maintaining a car then oil changes.

Put a few drops of oil on u'r bov (where the slider is) using the tip of u'r dipstick every time u check u'r oil... it's just that simple.

Check u'r vacuum line going to the BOV, make sure it's connected...

Where's the OP? He ask's a question, people tell him what to check and no reply back?

I have seen the supposedly indestructable HKS SSQV's **** up as well.

Money does not always buy quality.

And if it's a vent to atmosphere type, there is a chance that debris/crap/etc could have got into the discharge port. If that happens, it could score the bore or the piston, or get lodged between them. The later would essentially lock up the BOV since there is such a tight clearance between the two parts.

Take it off the car, disassemble it, clean everything, make sure the piston slides through the bore smoothly, then oil everything and reassemble it.
