Bus License

To drive a bus (school bus) do you need the bus license?? I heard you only need the license if you are transporting kids, for a school. if used for personal use, you're fine with your G.

Anyone know the truth behind this?

The G is fine for personal use up to 11,000 kilograms of loaded weight. A 72-seat school bus empty is around 6,000 kg or so..

Legally, you can't leave it yellow. You'll want to paint at least the front and back a different colour, but you can get away with using the existing chrome yellow on the sides if you incorporate the yellow into a two-tone scheme with another colour. The front flashing lights and swing-out stop sign have to come off, along with anything that says "school bus" or "do not pass when signals flashing".

Another thing... if it has air brakes, you'll need an air brake endorsement on your license.

that's what i thought.

hmm.. that'd be a sick bus with a nice paintjob. haha. thanks for the info

you need a class DZ license to drive a school bus. I remember this because I was going to apply to get my DZ to drive a cement truck. The driving school I was going to go to get my lessons use a school bus for the in vehicle lessons. yourmama is right about the air brake designation as well.

Unless your talking aout the short bus then all you would need is a class "Retard".....I mean G license....

and of course a hockey helmet like the one Zlatko wears :retard:

Nope, the official definition of class D is:

Class D — any motor vehicle exceeding 11,000 kilograms gross weight or registered gross weight, and any combination of a motor vehicle exceeding a total gross weight or registered gross weight of 11,000 kilograms and towed vehicles not exceeding a total gross weight of 4,600 kilograms, but not a bus carrying passengers.

Class G — any motor vehicle, including a motor assisted bicycle, not exceeding 11,000 kilograms gross weight or registered gross weight and any combination of a motor vehicle not exceeding a total gross weight or registered gross weight of 11,000 kilograms and towed vehicles where the towed vehicles do not exceed a total gross weight of 4,600 kilograms, but not,
(a) a motorcycle;
(b) a bus carrying passengers; or
(c) an ambulance in the course of providing ambulance service as defined in the Ambulance Act
Passengers as in personal friends are not "passengers per se".
Also, even the largest school buses fall within the 11,000 kg gross weight class, meaning that they can be driven on a G license as long as you are not carrying passengers for hire.

I bought my full-size bus with gas engine from Laidlaw for $800 plus $250 to certify a few years ago. We used it to go to races across N.America from Mosport to Montreal to Mid-Ohio to Watkins Glen to Daytona Speedway and everywhere in between.

Now they're all diesels though, so the asking prices have jumped way up.

Unless things have changed since then, Ontario school buses are retired from school services use once the bus is ten years old, so if you pick right, you can get a bus for not a lot of money that still has a lot of life left on it.

Pick well, try to get a bus with good gearing for fuel economy and highway speed without stressing the engine. Tow bills can get expensive.

My bus, the test trip was a trip to Daytona Speedway for the 24 -hour endurance race there. We counted the states as we went - if we made it past half-way and broke, we would tow it down. If not, we would tow it back. The money spent on the bus was throw-away, intended for one trip only. When it ended up completing the Daytona trip and lasting through many more trips and years, that was just a bonus as far as I was concerned.

TurboSupra12 03-23-2005 09:50 PM

well to tell you the truth, this isn't necessarily something that will go through.

there's a 1990 3000 series bus on ebay.. it's 500 USD.. 607.44$ with exchange.. just looked around, and came up with that..here's the link

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...&category=6728

oh and yeah, it's a deisel.. with a 7.3 litre

and *IF* we ever ended up getting one, at any time, i doubt it'd make any long highway drives.
