buying a car from the states

Im thinking about purchasing a car from the states. How would I go through the process of transferring ownership and cert and emissioning a US car? has anyone here bought a car from the states?

We just finished importing a non-road going vehicle yesterday. I believe it is much easier/costly to have a non-road going vehicle rather then road going.

For $5350 USD worth of car and parts, about $960 CAD was paid. Just make sure you follow the procedures outlined and make sure the fax you send to them 72 hrs prior actually arrives. That was the problem we had - they had received the fax (went w/confirmation number on monday) but they didn't have it there for some reason. Oh well, its in the garage now. :)

They check to see if any of the equipment is there, not if its working.

So, if you have so much as the switch on the dash.... ding.

Exactly..they asked us if it was working or not..they didn't care - plus even though it is for off road, they didn't care.

What about insurance?

I contacted RBC, my usual provider, and they refused to cover the transportation of the vehicle throughout the states as it is 'beyond their policy'. They are only able/willing to insure me once I have crossed the border.

Who have you guys used for insurance purposes?

I wish I could help you but my insurance company (the assholes that they are) have no problem whatsoever insuring a car bought in the States and driven up here.

Try the Cooperators.

In the alternative try contacting Statefarm and asking about getting a temporary policy for the States. They did it for a friend who drove to Mexico.
