car warranties

I just stumbled across this forum in my online search to see if anyone else but me feels that new car warranties seem to be a rip-off. I don't remember how much my husband paid for our extended car warranty on our Subaru (it was bought at the dealership and wasn't cheap ) but it seems NOW that we are forever having to take the vehicle in for yet ANOTHER checkup so that the warranty is still "good". I thought when we spent the big bucks to buy a NEW car that we wouldn't have to spend MORE thousands to make sure the new vehicle kept running properly. I guess thinking this way means I am an idiot. My husband says these checkups are just the cost of having a vehicle and he could be right but all these checkups BUG me. Next week the vehicle goes in for its 72,000 km checkup. The minimum cost for this will be $350. If the wheels need realigning (this is something that will be checked) of course the cost will be more and if the in-cabin filter needs replacing (another item that will be checked) that will top up the bill to between $500-$600. I am beginning to wonder what is the point of buying a new vehicle if it requires so many checkups. I am 70 years old and I know this 2008 vehicle has had more checkups in its short life than I have had in all of mine. Am I just not "with it"? Am I turning into a suspicious, cynical old witch?

Hi there i live next door in sk and i dont have anew car. I am fortunate to live away from any of our cities out on an acreage where we do most of our own work in a heated machine shed. We can't fix everything but we buy older vehicles that aren't to compacated to work on and do it our selves.My sister & B in L live in calgary & its the same with them & their new vehicles they take theirs for regular maint as per warranty ,iguess its a PM program . good luck later bake

Yes, M/W, being able to fix up older vehicles is a real advantage. All those Cubans can't be wrong!!! :-) Nowadays it seems the new vehicles depend upon computer chips to keep them running and who but dealerships can deal with them? I grew up on a farm where my dad could fix ANYTHING but even he had to give up on being able to fix his last car. This dependence on repairmen for so many things nowadays contributes to the cost of living being higher, I think. I know it also creates jobs but then, at the other end in the factories where vehicles are being built, robots are used instead of people so what is REALLY gained as far as employment goes.
