Crank sensor problem (P0336)

Hi, I recently purchased a 1996 Bonneville with the 3800 engine. It had been sitting for a while. (about 1 year) I checked over everthing and repaced the battery started it up and it runs great with the exception of the tach was about 2000rpm too high. I went for a test drive last night and the check engine light came on. Then after about 15min it went off again. The tach then worked perfect and still works right this moring. I scanned the car and got P0336 code which states Crankshaft position sensor A CKT range/perf. Does anyone know how to correctly diagnose this or is it possible it is part of a computer relearn being that the car sat with a dead battery for a year? ANy help would be great thanks.

in a dsm that's a sign of crank walk... i dont really know very mucht about it... but u might wanna check the play in ur crank.

hopefully it's nothing serious.
Good Luck

unfortunetly don;t let gonads mislead you in the wrong direction. What you have seems to be a intermittent problem with the crank postion sensor. The ecu takes this into consideration this sensor and compared to others to know postion of the engines cylinders in relation to actuating the injectors and when the the engine is firing. You either have problem with the Crank position sensor or a fault between the sensor and the ecu. The best way to confirm that the crank position sensor is faulty is use a labscope. I don't know is you have access to one, but it is a good way to confirm. You can hook it up and crank the engine to get a singnal from the trigger wheel. However since this is an intermitten problem you might not be able to. I think that it also is not to do with the computer trying to relearn.
Good luck.

I would check ICM, coils, then plugs and wires..

Take a look at the harmonic balancer if you're ever down there..
Jack up passenger side.. remove wheel and splash guard.. check the condition of it.. the sensor is behind it. ( you won't be able to see it unless the car is jacked way up.. and even then.. to see it clearly you'll have to remove the harmonic balancer )

You may also want to look into gettin CASE learn process done before tearing it apart. ( Did you turn the crank with engine off and or changed PCM? )

Keep an eye on any symptoms of crank shaft sensor on its way out ( i.e. stalls for no reason, Revs up on it's own, hiccups etc. ) Mine was on it's way out but it still worked fine for bout 2 years.. then I got sick of having to recrank.. and sometimes having to pull over and wait 10 minutes and try cranking again, so finally changed it.. and no issue since

( minus CES constantly being on cause my rear 02 sensor is dead.. :loser: )

EDIT: Thats the same code I got intermitantly for 2 years till I changed it 2 years ago

yes as drifter 420 says you could go without fixing this problem for a while, however evtually you are going to see the sydroms like he was saying... stalling, high idle, no start etc. One day though eventually you will get in and it will be a no start situation.
good luck:smilie_da

On the 3.8 it is a fairly easy job to replace them. Check the reluctor ring on the harmonic balancer to make sure there arent any broken, bent teeth. Also check the sirgap between the ring and the sensor.

Join OQCGP.... they'll hook you up.

But the stock tac usually reads about that much off. It coulde be solved by a simple CASE re-learn.
