escort problems
So I just bought that 97 escort, 78k, last saturday and its been going great. Starts/runs/drives good. Tonight Im leaving for my break, and about 5 mins after I get it started, I get to a stop sign, and Im not GREAT at driving stick yet, so I killed it going into first, then for some beknownst reason I go to start it and it turns over and turns over... doesnt start. I try to have my friend jump it, no go. Car will not start for the 45 minutes I tried. Ended up pushing it back to the parking lot... Go back to work for the rest of my shift. Come out 4 hours later and the car turns right over no issues. I let it run for a good 15 mins or so, and get in, I kill it in first again. I go to start it and it turns over and over again and finally sputters and gives in and starts. I got it home okay, from oakdale to white bear, but Im a little worried about that.
Do you guys have any idea why it would do that? Running just fine then I go to start it again and it turns over like that. For precautions, I just put some iso-heet in. Im going to try to check the spark plugs tomorrow. If I have time, get it somewhere to test the battery. Anyone else have experience with escorts, or have any insight for me? I need this to be a DD, so I wanna prevent whatever issues its having. Thanks. |
damn you should have gotten a chevy...
There have been a few cars that have come in to get tires that do what your saying, like this one saturn, you could tell some of the plugs were fowled up, it wouldnt start so we pushed it out and let it sit and it finally started sounding like complete ****...but other then the simualrities, it could be one of many problems. |
Yeah from what Im gathering on other sites is to take a look at the vacuum lines, fuel pressure regulator, and couple other things. If the plugs are easy to get to, Ill take those out and look at them too. Hoping I can bring myself to get up in the early morning and do this in the freezing cold. This is why I hate winter... its too ****** cold to do anything.
But yeah, I just need to poke around the engine bay tomorrow and make sure everything looks cool. That, and stop being a noob letting the clutch out too early in first gear. |
I had a temp sensor out in the Ranger one time and it would cause the revs to go way up in park and when you put it in Drive it would die unless you tried to keep the revs up, that was a 200$ fix... but we had thought it was a vacuum leak at the time.
I thought you could tell that you have a vacuum leak when your driving and it takes a sec for the car to accelerate/respond when you press the gas. |

See thats one thing I dont like about the escort, is theres no tach. I have no idea what the rpm is at. And I cant hear the damn thing cause its so quiet. I never realized how much I liked having a tach until now I dont have one. And it makes so much more sense to have in a manual. |
get a cheap tach or learn to listen to the motor and turn down your radio. i have a friend with a truck that has no tach and he sucks at driving it's great

ya you should go into a steady relationship, you are bound to have problems with an "escort"

I was waiting for something like this, lol.
On the bright side, this engine looks sooo easy to work on. Being able to see the spark plugs fills my dick a little bit, not gonna lie. And the engine is pretty clean overall which is surprising. The fuel regulator does look newer, I didnt want to remove the vacuum hose becuase its so cold, I dont want it to crack... Dont have anyway to get to a parts store, as there are none nearby. Well, I can just hope I get to work okay, and I need to not stall the car tonight haha. |
if it cranks and cranks the battery is fine so dont even bother getting it checked.
Just a random tid bit to prly piss paar off. A buddy of mine bought a 93 sentra from an old lady that her daughter had gotten into a car accident with. Car had been sitting in the same spot for 3 years paid 20 bucks, car started right there didnt touch a thing battery struggled to turn over but it started and we drove it home haha |

Sorry but thats OWNAGE right there... |
Im thinking I just flooded it. Its started up fine since. Only other thing it could be is that I added that iso-heet junk also.
|
ok dont start poorin tons of **** into the gas tank
change the plugs it will take 2 seconds and on a fuel injected car if u flood it, hold it WOT and crank it, the injectros arent supposed to fire if you have it to the floor while cranking |

Let alone, I dont even think I have any tools up here. I know it wont take long, but Im a ****** in the cold. Is it true that if you flood it your plugs need to be changed? Some people say yes, and some say no, which is it? |
