HOLY SH1T! def sucks to be me

well it finally happened.. ive had the car for 70,000 miles which bings the grand odometer total to about 147,000 miles.. well since i have had it nothing has broken mechanically.. no new water pump.. no new thermostat.. no nothing..

and i had a small water leak that i thought was gonna be a rusted out freeze plug due to the dripping off the back of the block..

NEGATIVE!!! put a pressure tester on it today and find out its the intake manifold gasket.. and it aint no small leak anymore..

then on the way home from work tonight.. the gasket blew on out.. when i pulled into my parking spot at my apartment the hood was steaming..

quoted $561.87 to replace the gasket.. thank god i can do it myself and itll only cost me about $40 bucks.. but itll be at least 6 hours of turning wrenches for me on friday..

trust me it sucks... no it isnt totalled but its virtually worthless right now.. plus im in college and paying all my own bills now so i havent had time for any mods.. and the thing is just falling apart.. but thatll all be fixed soon.. should be back in show condition by spring break nationals

that sucks dude but just shows how much money people can save when they do their own work and just buy parts.

paarman97maro 01-18-2006 12:52 PM

sucks man, i hope everything works out for you :(

Ouch.

6 hours though? I've never changed intake gaskets on a 4th-gen, but it doesn't take nearly that long on mine. You might be in for less work than you think.

it pays around 9 hours, it's a *****.

Str8upChevy 01-22-2006 12:47 AM

Intake gaskets on a 80 Z28 are a piece of cake compared to a 4th Gen. There's about 4 times as much crap that has to be removed just to get to them. Man I miss the days of working on my 67 thru 73 Camaros.
Nothing in the way,.....you could change intake gaskets in a hour.:teknology

2Poor4Z 01-24-2006 02:33 AM

umm well i already put in about 5 1/2 hours worth of work and ive gotten it all taken apart except the passenger valve cover and the lower intake mani

i had to remove the EGR, Valve covers, fuel rails and injectors, alternator, upper intake manifold, thermostat and housing, all the wiring and electrical junk, throttle cable and bracket

basically you have to strip it all the way down to the heads bare.. and 1/2 or more of the engine is underneath the dash.. those bolts are a ***** to get too.. ugh..

getting there tho. i hope to have it back running by friday

and of course im doing somecosmetic modding while its all off..

my brake calipers are bright ford blue high temp painted with camaro lettering in white so i decided to go the same route under the hood..

im doing the valve covers and the upper intake mani blue with white stripes down the top... should look pretty good when im through..

Rather you blow your manifold gasket than your entire motor. Been there, done that, got the VISA statement.

DDxHellRaiser 01-28-2006 12:40 PM

I got about 187,000m on my 94 t-top camaro...
I need to replace the valve stem rings sooner or later, its somewhat a big job. Also, my t-tops leak...The main problem I hate that I have is that I have a V6!!!!!! Grrrr...Im looking to buy a 97+ v8 camaro soon..
