LEAST restrictive air filter.
 

I'm running into a problem here, I got my new snail on and went out for boot, but this thing sucks air so hard that its sucking oil from my crank case, so ok, I disconnect the tube and put a proper breather there (going to tomorrow......) NEW Problem, it sucks so hard that it destroyed 2 air filters, one K&N was borrow'd after it destroyed a cheap ass aerospeed filter, and it later destroy the K&N by basically collapsing the inner support rings.

so I go to myself, this isn't right, I can't keep buying filters so the thing keep destroying them, don't even ask me to put the stock airbox on, the stock airbox got destroyed when last turbo was put in and lived for a day.

now, from my ricer magazines I saw one that would suit my need call Marshal Crate filter, anybody know where I can get something like that? or just generally really not restrictive at all, cause this is getting annoying.

edit: I just need something that will ensure large debris won't get in, I don't even need like paper type filter.

HKS mushroom filters flow the best but filter the worst out of all the top name brand filters.

There was a test on it comparing that one, k&n, blitz, apexi and one more i think.

If it's destroyin your filter by imploding it.. maybe look into a larger intake tube? ( and then a reducer? Since I"m assuming you don't want to oversize that it slows down air flow speed, but.. if it's too small and airflow speed is dramatic enough, it will implode like you mentioned )

So possibly almost like a trumpet setup ??

does it really? but that thing is bloody expensive for a filter, IIRC its like $200? I know it sounds lame, but I didn't expect this kinda thing happen on a relatively small turbo upgrade. What other um....... cheap options are out there? I need to buy another bov too, I broke a Bosch cbv...........

edit: hey drifter, you mean those trumpet thingy without filters at all? or what you talking about? I still use MAF and I want to protect the wiring in there.

Instead of finding another free-er flowing filter and losing filtration ability, use the same type of K&N filter, but larger so it's able to flow more. The filter you are using is obviously too small. It isn't a matter of the filter being able to flow enough, it's a matter of there not being enough filter area. Come on Sam you head you should know this... :laugh:

I am currently using a 4" inlet 9" long k&n filter. Its uggghhh, big. :)

Apexi appears to be the best, but also very pricey. If you buy it anywhere, check ebay.

update: the intake side is 2.5" I tried 3" steel pipe with a reducer, then the car ran ed up, big time, the MAF was fubar'd cause the pipe, as soon I swap back on the 2.5" stockies it ran fine. I'll run with home made mesh next week and see if any dust build up, before u go "AH dust in the turbo", if u see where the MAF, it can hardly get any dust in.

so 2" isn't suckin enough air in but it's laminar airflow over the MAF.. great idea to just jimmy rig a MAF screen for the sensor and then try runnin the 3" again.. only other solution is to put some form of reducer between the filter and TB midway so there isn't much force on the filter, but still able to run without a MAF screen. The Reducer right @ the TB might be causing turbulance over the MAF and didn't have enough time/length to straighten airflow..

EDIT: how wide is the openin on your TB?

B6T is right. You are putting too much air through a little filter. More surface area gives better filtration and lowers the speed of the air going through it, which in turn, reduces restriction.

Go bigger, or if you need to keep 2" inlet, split it into a Y and run two 2" filters. Sort of like my setup, but for a single turbo. I think big single supras do it that way.
