New 30th Anniversary times
 

I took my 30th Anniversary z28 (A4, stock except for exhaust and manual fan switch) to the strip last Friday (1/8) and here's my best run.

My last time going to the track was in late july and it ran mid 9s, compared to now when it was about 70 - 75 * and I was runnin very low to low 9s (9.3xx was worst).

For my next mod, I was thinkin about 3.73 gears...any suggestions?

If its your DD and you do much highway I think those would be too steep for you- they will help your track time esp in the 1/8.

I would say get into your tranny- a nice stall and firmed up shifts will probably do a lot for you as well. The things to do to go faster is only limited by your budget-

3.73s arent really that bad highway wise? I know that 4.10s will kill highway mileage didnt know that 3.73s would...unless im use to seeing V6 people with them I dunno.

Nice times though and yea some gears would help with a good tune. :)

I just figured out today that I have 3.23s....How much of a difference would 3.73s make?

Also, would headers (longtubes?) be a better mod?

3.73's would be a huge difference. And they are not bad for highway mileage. Put it this way, im in a v6 with 4.10's and I drive it highway :p

3.73's would spark that thing up a real good amount and be able to shave off some time in the 1/4 or 1/8. With a Z, it's not bad at all to have 3.73's, A4 or M6. Its fine on the highway either way.

You have stock exhaust manifolds and aftermarket catback? ... Yeah, at some point it would be good to get headers in there because if all you have is an aftermarket cat-back, your flow is still restricted from the stock manifolds.

You should get 3.73's and longtubes. You'd be able to feel a big ole' difference then. :D

Well I guess everyone's opinion of ok is different. If I'm on the highway I want to see less than 2 grand- I get horrible mileage in town and want to make up for it on the highway, but I'm sure I'm dumping a lot more gas when I get into it than just about everyone else here.

If you are going strictly for times work on your suspension and drivetrain first. You will see more improvement there. Once your set there work on making more power. No point in making more horsepower if you can't get the most out of what you have now.

Well, my M6 with 3.73's stays below 2 grand until you start cruising at somewhere in between 75 and 80 MPH, I can't quite remember. At 60 MPH its right around 1.5 grand. Come to think of it, when I drove this thing home from denver and I was cruising anywhere from 75-90 the whole way, and thats when I got my best gas mileage reading. 27 MPG. Havn't gotten that ever agian, but my last fill up I got 24.7 MPG ... lots of highway, but still pretty exciting.

Never driven an A4 with 3.73's, but from what I've heard its not bad.

Well this is my DD so I don't want strictly a track car -- just a fast *** DD. I know the guy we bought the car from gutted the catalatyc converters - good or bad?

Go get yourself some LCA's & panhard. I got mine from UMI (Sponsor) This will get your current power to the ground and out of the hole in a hurry. Expect your 60' times to drop to around 1.9-1.7 with a good tire. Once you prove you can get the power to the ground and decent 60' times, then work on the go fast parts. Long tubes, 3k stall or better, and gears 3:73 will put a smile on your face. Make sure to get a good tune and wake the car up. Dyno tune would be the best but if on a budget, MadZ or PCM4less will do in for now. Also if you don't have it already, a CAI. The list could go on and on, just a matter of what you want to spend. Traction is the key though. You can have all the power in the world, but if you don't get it to the ground it is worthless.

I've got a 30th anniversary edition also,i'm running 4:10s and it will do 65,70 on the freeway @about 2500 rpm,its a beast out of the hole,and it woke up alot on the big end,I noticed the biggest difference with the gear change,but this is also something i do not recommend trying to do yourself
