Rant On

Welp. Apparently I have 2.73 gears stock, and if I plan on swapping gears, I have to purchase a "thick" gear set. Well, me, not knowing this, caused me to buy the standard 3.73's. So now I have to drive 35 miles to get the set I bought, send the back to Speed Inc. wait 2 days for the old gears to get back to them, pay them another $30 for the thicker gears, wait another two days for the new gears to get here, take them 35 miles out to the shop, and wait another day for the gears to get installed. So I prolly won't have the car back untill mid next week, whereas I was SUPPOSED to get the car back last Saturday. Rant Off.

That sucks, I guess I would have just thought you had 3.23's but that's why you check.

1BADVETTE 08-15-2005 07:39 PM

haven't a clue how to check : /

You can check your RPO codes on the inside of your door jam.

Should be but give Speed a call just to be safe.

1BADVETTE 08-15-2005 07:48 PM

That's what I plan on doing first thing in the morning before I go to work. Hopefully I can get my other 3.73 gear set shipped back to them tomorrow instead of wednesday.

i like the wheels :)

RFF 08-15-2005 11:18 PM

Check and make sure you have 2:73's. 2:73's were popular with the early 4th gens but the late models I thought all had 3.23's.

69z-28 08-15-2005 11:30 PM

yes. 2.73's came in Auto LT1's. 3.23's only in early 93 6-speed (me) and then all the rest were 3.43 but with LS1 i dont know. i jsut didnt think they put 2.73s in an LS1.

Automatic LS1's carried 2.73 gears as well as the 3.23 gears, dubbed " performance axle

1BADVETTE 08-15-2005 11:52 PM

according to the performance shop, they said I had 2.73's which is why the ones I gave them wouldn't work. I'd trust them over me trying to figure it out. I don't mess with that stuff.

Just buy a 12 bolt and be done with it.

1BADVETTE 08-16-2005 12:13 AM

12 bolt is $2000 that I definately don't have, nor need at the time.

SOMBirdV6 08-16-2005 12:24 AM

I think Bens LS1 had the same gears as you Adam.

a 12 bolt is aftermarket. they come stock with 10 bolts. Moser 12 bolt is what i'd go with.....if I had the money...

archemedes 08-16-2005 11:57 AM

when someone says 12 bolt they normally mean the gm 12 bolt, if you mean moser you say moser they are not the same (the gm ones use c clips to hold the axles, and the guy who came up with them should have been shot)

1BADVETTE 08-16-2005 03:59 PM

most people, when saying 12 bolt, refer to an aftermarket built rearend. same with 9". And I went ahead and got some Precision Gear thick 3.73's on the way, so car should HOPEFULLY be done end of this weekend/beginning of next week.

No one say's 12 bolt and is refering to a GM rear end. They always mean an aftermarket one like Strange or Moser.

Welp, considering the way to make it work is with a gear spacer, and if you put a gear spacer in there, they're notorious for braking and causing problems in the rear-ends of 4th gens, that's why they don't make it work. Just accept the fact that your an idiot when it comes to the ls1 and stick to your 1st and 2nd gen ****.

don't ever call me an idiot. If you had some imagination and didn't rely on someone else to make stuff work you wouldn't have a problem.you want everything easy, well it's not always easy.I have made parts to work that were not intended to, because what was available was designed by someone who had never seen a wrench. The rearend in a 4th gen is a glorified pile of **** (even gm's good rear was junk compared to ford or chrysler)if you want to do the job right buy the right stuff not do it half ***

1BADVETTE 08-16-2005 09:41 PM

I'm buying the right stuff. Do you not see me NOT putting a gear spacer in there and paying the estra money for the right THICKER gears that are SUPPOSED to be in there? jesus ******* christ you moron.

I asked you not to do that. your the one saying the parts are wrong. I said to get a good rearend and do the job right once, you still have a rear that is unsafe (c clips don't pass tech at a sactioned nhra track for cars running under 13 seconds)I think you need to get the chip off your shoulder and maybe grow up a bit
