turbo help

Here is the thing, my friend recently gave me his stock turbo off of his 91 talon for free but the thing is the housing where the exhaust enters the turbo has a hair line crack but its only on the inside and hasnt reached the outside yet and I was wondering if I can still reuse the turbo by just welding the crack and grinding down the weld. Here is a picture of where the crack is.The white line is where the crack is.(this is not my turbo, camera needs new batteries)

Either that or just look for a exhaust side housing off ebay or from a blown turbo, doesnt take long to change and you could probably find one for dirt cheap.:smilie_da

They all have cracks in them. I haven't see a mitsu turbo that has more than 30K that wasn't cracked. If the crack doesn't go thru to the wastegate, you'll be fine. If it does go thru to the wastegate, you can do what o'malley said and get another turbine housing. The 14b comes with a 6cm turbine housing. There are a number of dsm vendors that sell turbine housings. I'd suggest going upto a 7cm for some improved topend flow. The 14b are potent lil turbo's. Infact, thats what most 2G guys upgrade to.

and generaly you can't weld the cast iron, it will just crack where you weld it. If it dosn't go through, then just use it. Most older stock turbo's have cracks in them, don't lose sleep over it.

You can weld cast iron just fine.

Heat it up first. A good welder will be able to do it trouble free.

I have a turbine housing laying around that you can have. It's cracked, but not too badly. You could have it for free if you don't mind driving to oshawa. LMK if you want it.

Oh, sorry. Just what I heard. I don't actually know anything about welding.

actually what super adaim said is true, you have to make cast iron RED hot and then be able to weld on it, seen it done before MANY time, and it works just fine. give it to a pro welder, hell be able to help you out

I would just replace the housing, 99% of my customers housings are cracked, if u do replace the housing i would get the turbine housing ceramic coated to prevent this in the future.
