Turbo Question
 

Hi, I bought a turbo a while back and I was wondering what kinda power it was capable of producing.

The turbo is from a Talon, I think. Pretty good condition from what i can tell. It has the number TD 04 cast on it, there is also another number cast on it S 49177-01900 , those are the numbers on the intake side. On the exhaust side, 77-12600 is cast on it.

I plan on putting this on a 2.3 liter quad 4 HO that is in my beretta gtz. I know , I know... dont laugh, just working with what i have. My goal is not to be the fastest , I just want to be faster than I am now. So far I have the turbo and an apexi safc2 for it. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how I should go about this and any thing I should watch out for?

That should be an ok turbo for that car. I wouldn't run more than 6 psi though. And if you can find one look for an 80's 3.8 rwd turbo regal. They have huge intercooler that can be very efficient. I know the GN's have the same intercooler, but they can br a real bear to find. When you install the trubo go with a minimum 2" exhaust. Hooker makes a really nice street performance muffler that would sound great on that engine, and still not be restrictive to the turbo. The less back pressure on the exhaust the better. Yea it is tiny, if you are looking to use a used stock turbo from another application I would suggest the ct-26 from a celica/mr-2, or even the ct-26a from a mk3 supra. It will flow enough for 315whp or so and can be had for cheap.

TD-04 should be the stock 14b turbo from first generation DSM. There should be a lot of info about this turbo if you use google. :)

Ya but that turbo on a stock GTZ engine with a nice intercooler would make that car move.

the quad4 was one of the only good 4 bangers gm ever made, so dont be ashamed.

thanks for the info, hopefully I can pull it off. I am hoping the small turbo will spool quickly but I hope it doesnt choke up at the top end cuz that would suck. If luck is on my side this should be done soon.

That's good news to hear because I wasnt really too sure because it looks pretty small but I figured what the heck .

I think I got a good deal the guy sold it too me for $110 and it looks to be in decent condition except that the wastegate actuator (i think thats what its called) is not there . I was going to weld the wastegate shut and use an external one anyway so i didn't think that would be a big deal.

I actually got it from a guy off of TSR's old forum , a while back.

Ya 110 is a good price... I would be careful with the whole 'welding the waste gate'... If a turbo comes with an internal wastegate I personally would leave itwith an internal wastegate. When engineering the turbo they banked on the internal wastegate, you wouldn't want to put too much pressure through a part that wasn't really designed for it.

^^I never thought of that. Do you think welding it shut and using an external would cause a prob? I am new to this, so I have no clue. Thanks.

Im not sure if it would or it wouldn't... but I would play it on the safe side myself. I would just get the parts needed to repair the broken piece

It's usually better to fix than to modify. If you modify it, there's just 1 more thing to break. The less peices, the better.
