hey everyone. New from NJ...

Just wanted to say hi. I found this site while using google. Turns out one of my pics was linked to in one post and it came up during the web search. I then decided to register and become part of this site.

Im pretty active on the NJ f-body owners association site, NJFBOA.org, and i'm registered on several other f body sites along with many other car related forums.

Currently I own 2 Camaros, a 85 iroc and a 2001 SS. the 85 is basically stock and the SS is considerably modified. I also have an 89 iroc chassis ill be using to rebuild the 85 which has major body rot. On top of those cars, i have a 79 vette project, 99 dodge ram diesel, 99 yukon denali, 99 grand prix gt and a 2003 Ninja zx-636r.

thats about it for now i guess...

Nice lookin SS, not a big fan if the rear bumper with the lights in it, but may look different once painted

Smokingss 02-01-2008 07:48 PM

yea, the rear bumper was a test fit from years back, i put it on one mornign just for a show at raceway park NJ, and never got around to taking it back off, in person it looks really good with the black still cuz it matches the "berger" panel and my stripes. Plus its something different, so maybe one day itll get painted or maybe not, who knows.

now i figure ill share a little more about the car...

I bought it brand new from a dealer back in 2001. Since then i went through the stock clutch(splines spun INSIDE the disc itself at 10k), 2 rear axles, starter, front brake rotors 3 times(stockers ket warping). And the thing that was the biggest concern was oil consumption and the infamous piston slap... i had it bad. 1qt per 900 miles. but i looked at it as one day id do a new motor....

well, on August 11th 2005, i got 20 bucks worth of "fuel" at a shell gas station in Hawthorne NJ. Car was smoking more than usual on the way home, but i figured cuz i was beating on it more that day and recently removed the cats. I got home fine, and parked it in my garage. The next night i began a shorty header install and upgrading all my rear suspension. That saturday i finished up and fired it up, i got about a mile and it ran like complete garbage. check engine light was on, i assumed something with the header install. I was actually blowing raw fuel out my tailpipes. i spent 10 days checking everything. I swapped coil packs, plugs, wires all cuz of no spark. then #3 primary was wet when i looked inside the header. i swapped out that injector cuz it was stuck open and pourng straight fuel. Before that, i had drained the tank and blew the lines out and even wiped down the inside of the tank even till it was bone dry. i checked out what came out of my tank and it was at least 2/3 diesel, 1/3 super. I contacted the nj dept of weights and measures, the local police to file a report etc. nothing could be proven cuz the stations tanks were drained and refilled the day after i got fuel. they knew what had happened....well, after swapping the one injector i thought i was good to go. i tried it again... little did i know #1 injector was also stuck open due to the diesel mix. well it filled #1 cylinder just enough, when it cranked over, it hydrolocked, snapped the rod, shattering the oil pan, blowing out the side of the block, and even blowing out the mount for the steering rack on the frame. the crankcase must have also been filled with fumes which ignited as well. it was pretty nasty. after several months, my extended warrany company came though and cut me a check for a new engine. Then in feb 2007, i fired up the new motor for the first time, it was great, took about a month to finsih most things up... got it on the road, lost the first balancer at highway speed, replaced it, lost that one at the track at 100mph, replaced that and the water pump it destroyed, and so far has been running nice since. I have hp tuners for it, but no time to learn to program so its still on a stock tune, lol. cam is 239/242 .603/.609 and engine has almost all common boltons, so with a real tune, it should be sick. right now i run 12.7@118., with a 2.3 60'(3rd stock rear, bald tires) trap speed shows what its capable of with good traction, then add a tune, and ill be real happy.

Now here are pics from mainly the SS engine replacement....

very nice work

MyFirstCamaro 02-02-2008 08:47 PM

nice cars, where in jersey you live to say nj/ny since im right on the border ?

98CamaroZ28 02-02-2008 09:27 PM

thats pretty sick, the LS6 motor is pretty nice, and I didnt know they had electric water pumps, I bet that helps with parasitic losses in the drive train a little bit, hows the handling with all the suspension add ons? Very nice work.

Smokingss 02-02-2008 11:17 PM

i lived in Closter, currently i'm stationed at Ft Drum, upstate NY, like 20 miles from Canada.

The ls6 didnt come stock with the electric water pump. When i was at the track the first time, the stock balancer bolt gave and my balancer decided to come off at about the 1000' mark and 100mph. It went up smashing into my oem water pump pulley then down into my steering, in turn bending my drivers tie-rod and then the balancer "tried" going out under my car, but due to the ride height it wasnt easy and bent up part of my k-member before it shot out. that wasnt a plesant day. So when i repaired the damage i decided to go with the electirc aftermarket one, even though it was almost $700. They say it gives back about 10hp and i was trying to get every little bit.

here are some pics of the damage after that day at the track....

and for the hell of it... here was the first balancer i had on the motor.....

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d5...S/balancer.jpg

and just because i can... the car will have a Procharger P-1SC on it within a month or 2, i just gotta pick it up when i get a chance to get back to NJ. Then ill get it tuned finally...

Smokingss 02-02-2008 11:25 PM

Oh, and here's how the car currently sits... with all the blood sweat and tears(not to mention $) that i put into that dam car, im very protective over it, but i did build it to be fast so breaking things is just part of it.... always room to upgrade haha.

98CamaroZ28 02-03-2008 12:21 AM

wow thats pretty sick, is the rear bumper going to be painted silver? Your car is looking very good.

The Sweed 02-04-2008 02:48 PM

Nice looking SS exept for the bumper.. all Camaros over here has those bumpers but i dont like them .. Sorry to hear about the engine! but glad it got sorted;)

ITSA6 02-04-2008 04:06 PM

i think the bumper is cool. definatly makes the car it's own. the motor is a good and bad thing. great that you have it now but bad considering the $$$$$ that had to go into that. looks like you got a fun car on your hands though

Bernotas05 02-04-2008 04:56 PM

Sweet car for sure, How to you like it at drum, I had a few buddies pcs to there and they all complain to no end about the cold. I wouldnt mind it much since I grew up in PA. Are you Army? what mos?

Smokingss 02-04-2008 06:28 PM

I love it up here at ft drum, the cold isnt that bad, it only got below 0 degrees F a few times, lol. I grew up in northern NJ so the cold doesn't bother me much.
And yes, i'm US Army, 88M(motor transport operator). We have the 5-ton cargo trucks up here so thats what i drive even though I trained on these trucks, the m915 tractor trailers, and the LHS(osh-kosh). We are slated to deploy to iraq in November, possibly earlier. My gf is currently in Army AIT for supply, and most likely will be joining me up here in 2 months. I have my Yukon Denali up here and i miss my SS so much, last time i drove it was about 3 weeks ago and i wont be in NJ for another 2 weeks. Once the weather gets nicer, like mid april... I'm gonna get it up here somehow, drive or trailer it. Then i'll get to do the procharger install. I'm sure the MPs arent gonna take a liking to me once the SS is on post, haha, luckily my one good friend from back home in Jersey is an MP here, and returning from Iraq next week.

As for the bumper, i dont see myself having it painted anytime soon. I had a photoshop done a while back to make it pewter, and it just didnt look as mean. It may look unfinished, but for now i like the pewter/black scheme. People that have seen it in person agree it works. And the bumper lights are functional as parking lights, i refuse to hook them up as brakes as well, lol. I also like the fact that the bumper eliminates the side markers.

Bernotas05 02-04-2008 07:43 PM

That cool, 88M is one thing I wouldnt want to be over there definatly takes some balls to get into that mos now a days. But atleast your not one of the petroleum guys. She should like 92Y I am an MP but got tasked to fill in for suppy for 3 months since the guy was pcsing and I am the units armor. It was pretty fun just sitting around ordering stuff and doing paperwork, it was definatly pretty laid back compared to what im used to.
