Hey guessing this would be the right place to introdcue myself. Well i am a high school senior and have always loved cars but never got one when i gota liscense. Never the less i have always liked muscle cars in partcular and continue to learn as much as i can so when i get to owning my own car i can get a good one and operate it and keep good care of a great muscle car. Have some expierence around cars as a couple of my friends drive various stangs and camaros as our school is filled with many lucky kids like that. Mainly here to just learn about cars in general and ask questions so taht i can understand new things. As such my first one is visual clues to tell if a firebird is a v-6 or v-8 other then exhuast or it saying trans am on this side. Any help would be greatly apprieciated.

hey, welcome to projectcamaro. thats cool that you want to learn stuff about cars even though you dont have one. I used to be the same way. you can tell a firebird is a v6 or v8 by the headlights sometimes or just badges. or you can listen really close. that probably didn't help but someone else will be able to explain it better

Haha ya the reason i ask if that a girl who parks next to me has a firebird and i swear its a v-6 knowing what i know already..i am around alot of sights(car web sights) and know quite a bit i am told by some but am still missing alot. anyways ya i am tryig to look for like specific visual clues cause it is bugging me...thanks for the welcome

edit its around a 1998 or so body style, ps tried the listening thing and that is what lead me to believe it was a 6 instead of an 8 even though it has a dual exit exhaust

well when considering stock ( alot of people put dual tailpipes on V6s) all v6s will have a single pipe, correct me if im wrong somebody but im almost positive theyre all single pipes. for camaros, it will say "camaro" on the fender or nothing at all, that is a v6. if its a V8 it will either say Z28 or SS. for firebirds, if it says Firebird on the door, its a v6, if it says formula it looks exactly like a v6 but its a v8, then theres a Trans Am which is a v8 always, then a WS6 which can be on a formula or a Trans Am. hope that helps.

Thanks 69z-28 u pretty much confirmed all of what i was pretty certain was true in that question i asked...not to mention told me some stuff i already knew but its all good better to have someone tell ya again then think u knew it already and leave it out so thanks for the info and thanks all for the welcomings.

Matt, some 6s do have duals... Not sure about birds, but some RSs came with duals if they had a certain code/package.

Yeah, the easiestway to find out is by the tailpipes, but not always a good method... If the tips are shiney, obviously its probably aftermarket exhaust. Most 6s the easiest way to tell is by the exhaust though. And badges and such, which matt said.

welcome, and yea its hard to tell if its a v6 or v8 without actually seeng the engine cause alot of people put aftermarket stuff on their car or take the badges off, but ur best bet would just be by sound and if u hear the car rev high a v6 will get kinda raspy (usually) and the v8 probably wont, i know not much help lol

If you cant tell the difference between a v6 and v8 @ 3,000 rpm, something is wrong with you or the car lol.

RS, Camaro, No Badges = v6
Z28, SS = v8

But, as with all cars, its hard to tell. Mine is a v6, but since I have a very deep exhaust with a cam, its always assumed im a v8 until I give it some gas.

...to be nice NOT a good idea for this chick. i am fairly certain it is and 8 due to dual exhuast and the pipes look stock. and i know that alot of the 8's say trans am on the side but this one says firebird wasnt sure if the ?formula? style had any change. I am suprised i can't tell enough difference but then again only time she had it started and i was near by there were a bunch of ricers going also...cant stand these kids/cars. But from what i know and what ya'll are telling me its an 8..to bad she isnt worth going near.:banghead: o well my friend drives a 2000 Camaro SS so its all good
