Sup Guys

Name's Mike. I've got a red 97 Camaro, 3.8L V6 M5, a few mods. I've had the car for almost 2yrs now and am still loving it. I've put all new speakers in it (Jensen 6 1/2s up front w/bass blockers, Pioneer 6 1/2 3-ways in the back), a new HU (JVC Arsenal KD-AR480), and 2 12" CVR's in a custom vented box powered by a Rockford Fosgate Punch 325.1. I have a body kit for it, just waiting to get it painted (been waiting for ~6 months :( ), has 3800 stickers, black nose emblem overlay, pre-97 taillights, blinker blackouts, rear marker black-outs, and will be getting tail black-outs when I can afford them. Performance wise, I've got Pacesetter headers going to a custom mandrel bent 3" exhaust w/Cherry bomb muffler and dual Z-28 tips, Moroso LT1 Cold Air intake, Aluminum Drive shaft, Z-28 rear w/3.73's, and a GT2 cam. But, she broke down just Friday, so she's collecting dust in the driveway until I can fix her. My uncle thinks it's a cracked piston skirt, so I'll have to pull it all apart again :(, and I work everyday and have school as well, so I don't exactly lave much time on my hands to fix her. But, on the upside, having her apart means more mods can go in :D Best time I ran was a 15.102 w/my system, on street tires, with my intake and my old exhaust (stock manifolds, 1.75" tubing, Magnaflow muffler; It sucked big time) and my aluminum driveshaft. Once she gets running again, I'm going to take out the system, the rear seats, get some decent DRs and pray for high 13's :D

sounds like a nice car welcome to the site be sure to post up some pics as soon as you can

Adric 01-16-2008 02:50 PM

Welcome

Phate 01-16-2008 02:56 PM

Welcome!

Another 3.8 with the GT2 eh? I love mine, its the perfect powerband. Im curious though, how did you only run a 15? I ran a 12.8 (granted I have more mods, and FI, but still)

Hopefully you get it up and running again soon! Cant wait to see pictures!

Phate 01-16-2008 03:07 PM

Side note: When you tear it down again, check the lifters. Thats a big issue with the cammed 3.8's. I'd also go ahead and throw on a set of heads (I know I make that 2 grand sound like not a big deal) but while your in there, you should do it, and thats the only way you can 'really' take advantage of that cam. I personally went with the Intense Stage 3 heads, but check my sticky in the v6 section for other options.

RadRacer 01-16-2008 03:19 PM

Well, I had this great big post typed up with links to pics and everything, but I can't post URL's until I have 5 posts :( The 15 was with an intake, aluminum driveshaft, 150-200lbs of stereo in the back, and an exhaust even more restrictive than stock. Since then, I've put 3.73's and a posi in, the cam, new 3" exhaust, headers, and will be removing some weight (at least the system). So, I'm hoping for atleast a 13, if I can get traction. Car would spin like crazy before I had these mods, I can't imagine it now.

Welcome to :yeahpc:

Can't wait to see pictures of this car!
Which body kit do you have?

RadRacer 01-16-2008 03:30 PM

Vizage body kit. Got it used for really cheap. Gotta strip it and prime/paint it and it'll be set to go on. Thinking of getting the whole car resprayed, so waiting for that, along with stripes so I can have them clear over the stripes.

Woo, 5 posts:

I had planned on getting a spare set of heads and having my friend P&P them for me, along with some better springs (105# or 130#). I'm still running stock internals and tune with this cam; I had planned on doing the above, but my dad didn't think I'd have enough time during the summer to build it, so he made me rush and do it over winter break when I couldn't afford anything. Doesn't make sense to me either :P .

What do you guys think?

archemedes 01-16-2008 03:45 PM

welcome car looks good

RadRacer 01-16-2008 03:58 PM

Thanks. I found a set of Vette rims for it for super cheap, but they're way overused IMO. Although, they do look good, so I'm thinking they may be one of my next mods. After I get it running again of course. The CB antenna is on there because, well, it had a CB radio in it. It's gone now (anyone wanna buy it :D) and the antenna's off the hatch. I put the "Just A 6" because most people see the stickers on the side (not reading them) and the Z-28 tails and assume it's a Z.

Phate, your car looks BA man. You need to get that bottle powder coated black though, IMO. You have any problem running the 125 shot? Did you need bigger injectors, or just put in a FMU? That's what I plan on doing with my car, once I get her running and finish off the exterior; I was thinking a 75shot or possibly a 100shot. That, along with a Pro5.0, P&P heads (hopefully can get them in soon), P&P UIM, P&P LIM, maybe even the TB, and then a tune to tie it all together. Biggest thing at the moment is cash. I may have to bore it out some if my cylinder walls are scratched up (don't think they are though), so there's a bit more HP :D

EDIT: O, and the windows aren't tinted anymore :(. Turns out, 10% is illegal in FL :p, but he said my hatch was fine. So, I'm riding around with 10% on my hatch, and nothing on the windows; looks pretty stupid :(

And here's a vid of my first time at the track. Ignore the "commentary", my dad's not the best camera man :p:

Pulled a 15.4, same mods as the 15.1, but on older street tires.

Tahoe SS. Ran like a 14.7, IIRC.

Thanks guys.

paarman, loving the green/black scheme of your car. I was thinking of doing that with mine (red, not green though :p). Did you do flat black or glossy though? How do you like it?

paarman97maro 01-16-2008 10:25 PM

Its mostly glossy, and I like it, thats why I went with it :p

ITSA6 01-17-2008 12:15 AM

you went with it.....cause it was cheap......WELCOME to the site! nice lookin car you have on your hands there

You can run a 75 shot all day long with no problems as long as you have the mods to support it. I ran with a 125 because all of my powertrain is built to handle it. And yes, you have to change out the fuel pump, and get larger injectors (I went with 25lbs) and change out the spark plugs.

Im running a wet system (a little on the rich side) instead of a dry just to keep me from running lean and blowing the motor. Get used to tearing down the motor about once a year though (not because of the nitrous mind you), i've turned 3 rod bearings so far, and am on my 3rd crank. I just went ahead and got a billet crank this time.

But keep me updated! Im here to help anytime, just ask.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you do nitrous, its pretty much worthless without SFC's and Drag slicks. When I first had the cam, heads, and nitrous and some other mods I went out with stock suspension and tires, I think I ran a 14 or so from spinning tires through 3rd gear lol.

RadRacer 01-17-2008 09:05 AM

Really?!? That's the first time I've ever heard of someone breaking their crank in our 3800's. I did have a wet kit that I pieced together, but needed cash and got rid of it :( Had everything hooked up, was just waiting to tap the TB and put the nozzle in. And I believe the spinning through 3rd part. Last time I went to the track, I had DRs (a bit worn, but better then street tires) and I could still break it free when I hit 2nd. Part of it was probable due to me not heating them up enough though. I really should get a line-loc :p

Thing is, this is also my DD, so I don't want to mod it to much that it takes away it's reliability and gas mileage. Last time I checked it, I got 25.8MPG, with the cam :D

I get between 9-14MPG. Mine is also a DD at the moment, but it cant be taken too far lol.

And I only broke one of those 3 cranks, the others I just refuse to have balanced, i'd rather have new.

RadRacer 01-17-2008 11:20 AM

Yeah, see I drive ~28 miles to school everyday. Double that for the ride home, and then add another 30miles for ride to work. I'm doing almost 90miles a day, so gas mileage is a fairly big factor for me. Plus, one of my jobs is pizza delivery, so it'll be doing a lot of city driving.

Phate 01-17-2008 11:29 AM

You can do plenty without making it a horror to drive. It only started to get bad as a DD when I started changing out most of the powertrain, rear end, and tranny. All I have to say is, driving a car with a 3 plate clutch daily, definately gives you a workout on your left foot lol.

And fyi, if you didnt know this already, the GT2 is a great cam, but it has a major drawback. Distance driving is majorly affected. With the way the oil circulates, and how high RPM's you'll be driving the car highway, you cannot keep it lubricated after a while (I drive mine on trips sometimes), and you need* to stop every couple hours or so to let the oil settle.

* - I say need just because im very precautious about my car, and it'll keep it from wearing out the motor and running un-lubricated.

Did not know that. But, I don't drive it more than 20-40 minutes on the highway. If I ever have to, I'll make sure I pull over every hour or so, to let her cool down a bit.
