I was looking at the Infiniti G35x until gas prices in my area hit $4.50/gallon. So I thought, hmm...maybe I'll try and economical car. Personally, I drove the Civic, and you are going to be disappointed. There is NO horsepower, and you might as well ride your lawnmower to work. A co-worker also drives 1.5 hours each way per day and bought the new Corolla, she likes it, but it is slim on any features. Since you're in your car so much, you should at least enjoy it. The Mazda 3 is okay, but I think they are overpriced and don't have a nice warranty. Try looking for an upgrade to a Honda Accord. You can get the EX-L (loaded with everything) model (this is in the NYC area) for about $23-24.5K after negotiations, plus tax, title, etc. It still gets really nice gas mileage, had good horsepower, the reliability of Honda (always a good car) and still like the car you drive. Also, their are several models to choose from (both sedan and coupe), so you can pretty much get whatever you want. They are also offering a hybrid version which has gotten very good reviews. I'm actually going to purchase the EX-L myself. I only know two people personally who just purchased it and LOVe it.

I prefer Honda Civic my husband has one and I used to have one they are great on gas mileage, but Corolla's are pretty great on gas as well. I would'nt compare a Mazda to a Toyota or a Honda., but thats just me. My husband and I can go on a two hour trip in his Honda on a 4th of gas and it barely drops even with gas prices being so high.
