how do I turn off the check engine light?

The check engine light comes on. I know its because of the cat converter. I have taken the positive cable off the battery. The light stays off for a few hours, but then is on again. How do I solve this so that it stays off?

....i have the same issue, it distracts and annoys the hell out of me!!!!
