2001 Civic loosing coolant please help!!

Hello, this is my first post here and I need some advice. I recently bought a 2001 Civic EX 120k At 1.7 for my son. After driving the car for a little over a month the car starts running HOT yikes!! We take it to a trusted mechanic and we are told to start looking for a diffrent car. "Dump it" his words. The reasons he gave were the records we have from pst owner show a history of the car running hot. At 101k the headgasket was replaced for a second time and my guy thinks the car has a cracked block or cracked head. No problems with any visual leaks no smoke runs great. It looses most of the coolant after driving for 30-40 miles. I really don't want to spend more cash on a new or rebuilt engine and I wont dump it on someone other than trade it at a dealer. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with Bars Leak or Steel Seal in there Hondas? Any actual experience would be most appreciated. I figure what the hell? Thanks in advance.

i believe your car did come with a D17Y8 or something along those lines, those engines don't come too expensive used, i would go ahead with a swap for another stock motor
