2001 Honda Civic Brake Problems?

Hello, I own a 2001 Honda Civic LX, and I just got this car a week ago. Originally I had a 95 Honda Accord EX, and i can tell a difference in the brakes. The Civic is harder to brake. I go about 40mph and when i press down on the brakes, it jolts me foward then stops. And i don't press on the brakes hard either. Then when i slow down, i have to really push on the brake pedal, where as my other honda is slowed down at the slightest touch on the brakes. I didn't have problems with this with my other car, is it because its a new model and im not used to it, or is there really a problem with the brakes?
