There are so many sensors on a petrol engine these days any one of which, if they are faulty, can cause an engine to fail to start. Camshaft/crankshaft rotation sensor is a favourite.

earlier civics were notorious for cam belts slipping or breaking ... these belts are also timing belts and when the car is out of time it will not start.
