Civic Emissions help

Hey Guys i just purchased a 91 Civic with a JDM ZC 1.6 motor in it. I am new to the Honda's so i do not know to much. I am told it is a Acura motor 88-89. First problem i had was the distributor went so i replaced it.

Now i can not get it to pass Emissions. 2 failed test.
First test it failed everything on the test. here are the readings.
Limits Reading Results
HC PPM 75 138 Fail
CO 0.42 1.158 Fail
NO PPM 864 1067 Fail

Curb Idle
HC PPM 200 389 Fail
CO 1.00 2.35 Fail

This first test was tested as a 1.5

The second test i told them it had a 1.6 so they tested as a 1.6
so for the second test i replaced the CAT along with the O2 sensor
I also noticed that on the second test as a 1.6 the limits you are allowed were raised higher.
Test 2 results improved on one part but worse on another
Test 2

Limits Reading Results
CO PPM 363 99 Pass
CO 2.87 0.87 Pass
NO PPM 3838 95 Pass

Curb Idle 300 1261 Fail
CO 1.50 3.93 Fail

Ok so any help would be great do not know what to do next. Not sure what would cause the curb idle reading to jump so high. I really need to pass this test as i have my safety already and it is only good for 36 days. Guess i should have waited on that for emissions to pass first.

Nope any shop i have been to in my area say they do not know much. Any where else i would have to tow it as my temp permit has expired and can not get another. So i now have to tow any where i take it. So i need to know where i take it will be able to help or give me suggestions on what to look for before i retest at the place next door to where i live cause i can drive it there and not worry about being pulled over

If your ecu is modified, it most likely past. I just went through the same thing.

Deevs 05-21-2009 12:28 AM

I have now changed plugs, wires, throttle position sensor, had the intake cleaned, injectors cleaned.
I am now still failing but only on the curb idle on the co. The limit is 1.5 and my reading is 1.63
I do not know much about the ecu. i am told to check the programing. Is it possible it is causing it to fail. The last test was done before i changed the TPS. 7 failed test do know where to go from here.

My civic isn't quite as old as yours, its a 98 with 200,000+ km 1.6L engine. I just recently did my e-test and passed with flying colors. I don't know if you tried this or not, but when it's time for my e-test I do a few basic things that help.

1) Around 2-3 weeks before I want to do the test, I throw some STP Fuel treatment in my tank. Its 5 buck at canadian tire. Throw that into a full tank and follow the directions.

2) Do an oil and oil filter change. Best to do this as close to the day you take your test as possible.

3) Right before you go to do your test, drive around for a good 15-20 minutes. Do some highway driving. This will get your catalytic converter hot and it will work better.

Like I said I pass with flying colors. Now not to say that you will pass gauranteed, but it helps.

These were my results.

ASM2525 Test
