High Reving = Engine Damage?

Hey guys i want to do a lil research so i can learn a bit more about engines and performance driving.

Alot of older ppl i know always tell me not to rev high cause it damages the engine, im sure it is possible but here is my question. My car has the 420A in it its a 2L motor and redlines at 6k rpm. Usually when I'm pushing the car i let it rev all the way up to 6 because after analysing some dyno charts of similar setups i found my peak power is just about at 5,800 or so. After 6,500 tho there is a huge drop off. If i were to get all the supporting mods done (crane makes 10/12/14 degree cams, valve springs and retainers) would i be able to rev much higher. Ive read a few ppl talking about how they rev freely to 8,700 rpm with the same car after those few mods.

From what i understand alot of honda engines with smaller displacement ahave their peak power at really high rpms. If one were to constantly shift his honda at 8,000 rpm (given he has proper mods ie not stock engine) would it be damaging to the engine.

Im guessing the wear and tear on the head assembly would be greater but if i were to lets say swap the head gasket more often and so on wouldnt it help?

tnx alot for ne input

well yeah i wound do like valves, springs/retainers, ans cam shaft well your at it! and if you wanna go really high reves i would suggest getting rods but its depending on high you wanna rev but reving should not hurt it just dont red line.

redline starts at 6k bro and it goes on to 9k i was thinkin with all the mods to be able to rev it up to 8.5k?

well if you wanna go to 8.5 then you have some work to do I would go with every thing you can re place like valves, valve springs, cam shaft, rods, pistons, injectors ect

Start by not listening to Phillet.

A properly balanced bottom end will have no trouble. Vibration is a big problem.

You are right that has nothing to do with the rev limiter so dont even read that my bad, but for higher reves I would just you get some new valves, valve springs/retainers, and cam shaft the reson why is to be able to handle the wear and tear and the higher revs just a suggestion

i had a 90 zc non-vtech and ran it to redline every day ...needless to say it was burning oil afer 30,000km...but the motors are soo cheep that it doesnt matter...they r only worth 400 with a 3 month warrenty on it. wouldnt recomend bringing the rps that high if you want to keep yer motor for too long

why would you decide where to revv to now? Decide upon when your cams stop making power

jimmy_on_20 05-24-2006 03:26 PM

there is a rpm range called the powerband...usually shift rite at the end of the powerband...the higher the rpm the more it will damage your engine with time...not saying it will blow rite away...try switching to a thicker oil and go full syntethic..10w30 castrol is what i was running and i will b using that in my next car

teg_gsr 05-25-2006 10:52 PM

I would recommend 10w40, if you want to go thicker. 10w30 syn. will be thinner at O/T than 5w30 convent.
