Honda Civic 1987-Needs Carborater-can I still drive it?
My very first new car, 87 Honda Civic (158K)
I've had a lot of work done on this. Most recently it started to idle low and was really hard to start in wet or cold weather. Runs perfectly when it is warm. My auto mechanic says that I need a new Carborater (well, one from a junk yard) and that it would run about $1000.00 Given that the car is worth less then 1/2 of that, I don't think this would be a great investment. If I forego the carborater, what other issues will I face with the car? I was going to give it my neice next year when she gets her license- she would just drive it to and from school. Suggestions? |
nope.carb delivers gas to make it run. bad carb no drive.sorry.

If you drive it when it needs a new carb, it will die quickly.

Do you really want to give a car to someone that might not start when it is really needed?
I'm sure a carb can be found a lot cheaper,,, maybe Ebay? Depending on your engine..try these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/86-87...em180205521557 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1986-...em350013574622 |
I suggest you do not spend $1000 to fix that old a car, unless your just in love with it. For that kind of money you can get a whole other new "used" car. - I am bias though as I do not own a car. About 12 years ago I went "green" and I commute everwhere on a bicycle. It's slower, but I feel great and save a tone of money.

first off if a carbrator is costing $1000.00 someone is getting screwed and your not enjoying it. I can get a carb for that car for around $80.00 and I'm pretty sure the mechanic can to. Call the wrecking yards and get a price most carbs are only 4 bolts and a gasket to change them out. You probably don't need a new carburator, it might just be a vacume leak I would get a second opinion from another mechanic and quit usung the one charging such an out ragous fee.
Carburator $80.00 shop fee charged $65/hr 3 hrs max $195.00 Total $275.00 Hope this helps good luck F99 |
I agree with Frank. That sounds really high.
Find another mechanic and have them do an independent inspection. I wouldn't even tell them what the last mechanic said. Just tell them what you said here about it running rough. It's unfortunate that a lot of mechanics rip off people who know nothing about cars or are females. It happens. |
