Honda Civic Transmission Problem?

Hi, i recently bought a 94 Honda Civic with automatic transmission, and I keep encountering the same problem. It feels like the transmission is lagging when shifting gears. Especially when i try and accelerate. It can be a real pain when getting onto the highway, id push the pedal down, the car would rev, but it would not accelerate. Anyone can tell me what i should check? Can i fix the potential problems by myself?

check the tranny fluid first

BrowNKiD 02-13-2008 10:40 AM

how many km on the motor/tranny?

Antoshka 02-13-2008 06:03 PM

both colour and level of fluid are good. the car has 160,000 km on it.

What color was it? And how did you check the level?

Antoshka 02-13-2008 07:11 PM

colour = pinkish
level = in the cross hatched level of the dipstick just like it says in the manual. i did check it when the engine was cold.

scratch that, i double checked after i warmed up the fluid and it is actually in the low mark. i will add some fluid this weekend and let you know if there is a difference.

Well for one thing pinkish means it needs replacing. For another thing, make sure you check the tranny level when the car is OFF.

By the way; Your OEM Honda fluid should be cherry red. I'd look into replacing it soon. Its bout 100$ from Mr.Lube who has a machine that flushes it all out.

Antoshka 02-14-2008 09:26 AM

yeah the car was off.
what does pinkish colour mean?
i though red transparent (pinkish) was good? its brown/burnt thats bad no?
also i read bad things about the mechanical flush, heard that honda dont recommend it. i was wondering if i could do it myself by just replacing the fluid over and over?

drain it from drain plug. fill with 10 w 30 syntec. keep it simple stupid

VWJettaMK2 02-15-2008 04:11 AM

DO NOT USE SYNTHETIC!!! If it didnt come with it, then dont use it. Im almost positive your's didnt come with synthetic tranny fluid.

When its red its good. Pinkish means that the chemicals which keep your tranny lubricated are starting to not do their job.

I cant remember of the top of my head if your tranny has a drain plug but if it does, you still wont get everything out but hell its worth a try. Make sure you buy your OEM spec fluid because the tranny fluids they use now and back in 94 are completly different.

Antoshka 02-16-2008 07:34 PM

well i bought dexron 3, the manual says i can use dexron 2, and dexron 2 and 3 are the same anyway right?
so ill hopefully get the jack tomorrow and do the works, let you guys know if it helped. and yeah luckily my car has a drain plug for the transmission fluid.
btw i checked the current tranny fluid colour to the one i bought and theres a significant difference. whatever is in there is much more faded.

VWJettaMK2 02-17-2008 12:01 AM

Yea let us know dude. Best of luck to you. Make sure once you drain it, and re fill it, start your car, go through each gear(hold in each gear for 5-10sec. then go to next).

Let us know how it ended up.

Flush 3-4 times.

sounds like the intermediate band in the transmission.. like its not catching.. likely that is what it is. you need to take the tranny to a tear down shop and get that checked.. check the applied pin also.. it could be a little outta wack
