mechanical issues like domestics do?

The domestics have actually come a long way in recent years, but Japanese cars were never all that much more reliable. My friend Mike had a 1990 Accord that fell apart at 150k but still drives his 1989 Chevy with 250k. So there has never been an extremely clear-cut advantage with the Japanese cars. The problem is that up until recently, domestic manufacturers were (and in Chrysler's case still are), in some cases, not paying enough attention to quality. I say in some cases because the majority of domestic cars have been fine. But just remember the '96-'00 Taurus's transmission problems, and the horribly cheap interiors of many 1990's GM vehicles. Japanese automakers have made their missteps too. Toyota has been having a lot of problems lately with engines sludging and being ruined far under 100k, and who could forget the '05 Sienna minivan with the sliding doors that fall off. Nissan's latest Quest and large SUVs have been highly notorious for problems. Consumer Reports recently announced that Toyota's reliability has worsened while Ford's has improved.

Bottom line: Most cars these days are built to go over 200k easily with meticulous maintenance. Japanese vs. Domestic isn't the issue. The key to finding the most reliable vehicles is researching specific models, years, and drivetrains.
