Steering will makes noises, will be hard to turn, and you could have fluid on the ground.

I'm no mechanic, but just had one replaced. We were losing steering fluid, and it was leaking from the rack and pinion assembly.

So leaking is a bad sign.

what are the symptoms of your automobile, is it all over the road? while driving, did you let go of the steering wheel when driving straight to see if it wanders to the right or left?

rack and pinion my need readjusted if you've had a front end collision with something big, or you drive too much over bad railroad tracks, giant pot holes all the time.

so if you dont do any of those , your car is probably out of alignment & just need lining up. about a $85 job. or it use to be.

however if your car is wondering off the road look real close to your tires you may just need a new one on the front i had a tire on my truck that was wondering & was gonna take it to get mine lined up , the honest front end mechanic told me to rotate my tires from the front to the back to rule out a $160 job. i did it & that was my problem my tire had a knot on it that i couldnt see , the tread was worn down on one side, but i bought a new tire & put on the front & solved my problem.
