For starters, watch the youtube video it makes things really simple. but basically on a vtec engine, there are two cam profiles. one is used when not going that fast to conserve fuel and still get decent power. when a certain rpm is reached the vtec "kicks in" and it uses the second profile which allows the cam to lift higher thus letting in more fuel thereby increasing power.
