Short Throw Shifter
I just bought a short throw shifter for my 96 integra. I haven't installed it yet but I wanted to know if it would really make a difference when I drive. I heard that it makes shifting gears quicker. I need some input.

i mean if you are relly putting it in to gear fast like goin threw the gears as fast as you can your gunna wear your tranny out
oh alright. thanks alot dude. much appreciated.
Also, make sure you buy a short shifter that is high quality, I've seen some that have snapped (ebay). You don't want to be driving with vice grips :P
There are many short throw shifter and personally i prefer an oem itr shifter. Sure the shifts are shorter with the short throws but they break. The only short throw i would buy is the skunk2. If you jus want a shorter throw for daily driving cool but from a racing aspect i would rethink it.
it makes a difference and it makes your life easier rather than stretching out on 1st 3rd and 5th.
you may lose distance with the shift but you also lose leverage.
i'm running one of these in my car i'm happy with it kinda.
BMRacing ergonomically it's not the best since i gotta reach for it a little. i might get an extention for it. |
its a sick thing to have, but after shifting through the gears on an nsx, you'd wonder why you went through the trouble for what you got out of it.
I have a 93 that is supposed to have a short shifter in it... it looks like they cut the top off it too...
Anyway to tell if there is actualy a shorty in there? |
don't bother with anything that's been cut most likely not a short throw shifter if your gonna spend the money go with b&m i have one i love it i've had it in my civic for about 4 years hasn't snapped on me yet i've tried others did'nt like them or they snapped on me i say B&M is the way to go.
Actually B&M makes one of the worst honda short shifters. The gears doin engage smothly and the throws arent smooth. plus i had one broken one be4. The best short throw is a skunk2 or OEM!!!

if you are breaking shifters I would say that you as a person are having shifting problems there should be no reason to have to be that rough with it.. |
i agree.. how hard do you yank on the thing? it should go in with ease. I have one and its super smooth.. got a real good bushing kit too.
im speakin from a racing aspect. And im not the only person who has broken one or that had the same problem. Pls make fun of me when you actually have some experience.

good build quality nice and heavy.. I like it cause its not a super duber short shifters that have no throw, I have nothing bad to say about mine.. |
B&M makes quality parts. Weather it breaks depends on alot of other things. All items wear out. Thats why when you buy a B&M shifter there is warranty. Plus there are shifters that reduce throw(Such as B&M) and then theres shifters that reduce throw, and side to side, like DieselGeek Short shifters.
Besides if your braking shifters, then you better slow down before something else breaks..LoL :) |

short throws dont make much if any difference in the qt mile. you can shift just as fast with a stock one if you move your arm quick enough.. and buddy were not making fun of you so stop being so defensive, if your tranny is starting to go because you yank your car into gear thats your own fault
i have one also, just feels better when u drive, try not to rape the tranny with it, like shifting as u were in rally or somethin.

hahaha, true
My experience is that they wear the tranny out much quicker.. say goodbye to third gear if you are someone who bangs gears all the time... I have learned my lesson with banging gears.. nothing good can come from it in the long run.. lol
with me it made a difference but only down side i sit far back and sucks cause i sorta gotta fully stretch my arm....
thats true, the console is very low on a civic, and with the short shifter it becomes even further to reach.
How are people snapping shifters??!!
Unless you're driving a car with dog-engagement internals in the gearbox/transaxle and you're loading the shifter and using the rev-limiter to slot the next gear (Formula BMW styles) then you need to settle right down. Shifting should be a deliberate, smooth, calculated movement. Yes, you want it to happen as fast as possible, but violently smashing the selectors around in the 'box accomplishes nothing but premature wear and tear or a mid-track failure. You lose more time per lap mucking about violently with the shifter and missing shifts than if you just take the extra moment to get it done right and get your foot back to the floor. Even garbage Ebay shifters have enough bending moment resistance to survive civil, calculated shifting. In the end it's really your own choice. I like having one on my road car because when I track the car, the throw distance is more similar to the formula car I cut my teeth on. But I've tested many cars without short shifts and the difference is negligible. |
