What are some ways to upgrade the engine of my 99 civic Ex?

I have a 99 civic ex coupe and was wondering some ways to upgrade it maybe get some more horsepower..and i was wondering if i add a aftermarket intake does it effect my car in a bad way, ive been hearing that the short ram intakes suck in alot of hot air...so if anyone has any ideas let me know.

I'll assume that is an automatic transmission. If not, then even better. I'd look into sourcing a newer/low mileage motor from the 99-2000 Si. I can't be entirely accurate, but I think the EX had somewhere around 125hp stock, the Si stock is 160hp.

That way you've got a good increase in hp without even breaking into the engine or adding mods yet. A turbo/supercharger will cost the same if not more, and if you did forced induction later, you'll get even more gains.

If a different motor is out of the question, then I do need to caution the cold air intakes depending on where you live.

I was stationed in central GA with mine, and if it rained hard and fast to where drainage couldn't keep up I ended up having the engine shut down to avoid water in the combustion chambers. The short rams do take in air from under the hoods, but they are still more free flowing and provide a greater volume of air than stock.

Remember the mantra, if you're going to make it go faster, start with making brake (not break) faster!
