My old truck had a loose wire on one of my sensors and that gave me a check engine light. Check engine light by the way have more to do with smog than the protection of your car. Sometimes if you take it to a good smog place they will find it, and if you chose, fix it. Once you locate the bad sensor then its just getting the part, and most are pretty much easy to replace. If you dont know where it is, have the mechanic show you it. Then replacing is simple, yet usually expensive.
