Timing belt and water pump usually get done together. It costs me $500 last summer, i had it done in few hours. I have a 91 Honda Civic.































Fixing car is like getting a surgery done. They tell you everything you may not need to be done. I will have few places to look at it.































Timing belt, yes you have to have it done every 2-3 years, timing belt can ruin the engine ( if they break )and your car will be done forever , in most Japanese car, especially Honda and Toyota.

It takes a few hours I think it is typically billed out at 3-3.5 hours. Hard to say. I could do it in 2.5 hours if I had to. The other belts would be for the alternator and air conditioner. They are multi rib belts. They should take about 2 minutes each.































Why do you ask?































Oh if the timing belt broke there could be other problems like bent valves, it would take much longer to rebuild the head. But It sounds like you are asking about just replacing a warn belt.

The other cracked belt is probably the fan belt or the generator belt.































I carried spare belt around for years and one day the fan belt snapped (warning light in dashboard glowed) and I pulled over straightaway, call NRMA roadservice. The road mechanic was able to fit the belt on in minutes. And advised me to have the belt adjusted ASAP for tighter fit.































It was a good investment to have done a car maintenance course before I obtained my full licence; a housemate went with me. It saves me from calling parts 'thingyneebob'.

I reckon the time/costs involved relates to having the replacement part delivered and how easy it might be to reached the engine for fitting the timing belt.
