only the check engine and high beam dash lights come on.

My 92 civic does the same thing some times. I fix it by hitting the dashboard. I'm not kidding. I just pound it once or twice, and it fixes itself.

By the way, if your check engine light is on, you should probably ask the mechanic to check it out when you take it in...

Have you checked the dimmer switch to make sure it didn't accidentally get turned off? If it's in the right position, you may just have a burnt out fuse.

When a car gets to be 10 years old these little pains start happening. If you have checked your fuses then it's more than likely a loose wire or a default bulb. This is just something that happens when you want to keep an older car you really like. You, possibly can pull the front dashboard yourself or have a friend do it. I have a 90 Toyota pick up and it has the dashboard attached in two sections. The part around the main area where the lights are has only 8 screws that holds it on.

In most older foreign cars the screws are easy to get to and you can replace the bulb yourself. If it's in the wiring then leave that to a professional.
