1986 Accord Oil Pan
 

I need to remove the oil pan on my 86 Accord LX to clean the oil pump
screen and associated parts. I have everything off that needs to come
off including the nuts and bolts in the pan. On each side of the pan is
a metal strip running almost the full length of the pan presumably to
create a tighter seal. How do I remove these strips? I have all nuts
and bolts out. Haynes or Chilton manuals do not show or mention these
strips.

The strips stay in place. The pan is probably kind of glued
in place from the aged oil. Tap it with a rubber mallet a
few times and pry selectively, and it should come free.

what makes you think you need to do that? chances are, you'll introduce
more grit into the system than you'll ever clean out. if you think
there's gunk you need to dissolve, use a quality engine oil and change
every thousand miles for 6 months.

Thank you for your information. Due to cold weather and not havng time
off I have not tried getting it off any more. Next opportunity I will
try your suggestions. I hope you have had a very nice Christmas.

Thank you for your response. As to why, the oil light suddenly started
coming on when rpns dropped to about 1800, going back off when rpms
increase to about 1900 and stays on until rams drop again to about 1800.
Taking things in the easiest order, I replaced the pressure swath, no
change. The oil pump has less that 10,000 miles on it. It was replaced
because the original one leaked. My thinking is that if the pump is
defective the on-off rpms would not be so constant. My other reason is
that a Honda mechanic said that in that series of engines the screens
had as tendency to clog.
