1990 Accord EXR ingnition problem

Hi there,

Just bought my first Honda, a 1990 Accord EXR with 4 sp automatic. The man i
bought it off of told me that it needed a new distributor in order to work
right. It runs fine now however it has a few quarks

-Its take about 15 to 20 seconds of holding the starting motor open for it
to finally start.

- It runs rough at about 1500-2000 rpm like the ingniton timing is off. but
a really rough burble.

At 4000rpm its like a rev limiter kicks in a will not go past 4000 unless
you gear down then it will rev to 4500 with sounds like no spark and all you
hear is engine compression.

Does this sound right to need a new distributor?

Or am i into something else?

Thank you
Robert

Have you checked the compression on this?

Re: 1990 Accord EXR ingnition problem

Your distributor is probably bad. Check the timing with a timing light
first. If it is impossible to time it correctly (too retarded or advanced,
or not steady), chances are it is your distributor.
The fact that you have to hold down the key for 15-20 seconds seems to
indicate low compression; however, if your distributor is not functiong
properly it is possible it will create the same problems.
If you do change the distributor, make sure you get a new rotor, new cap,
new spark-plug wires, and spark plugs.

Ok, I put in a brand new distributor and it runs like a brand new car,
Thanks very much!
