1996 Accord EX V6 Cruise Control
 

Happy New Year Everyone,

I just got a 1996 Honda Accord EX V6 with about 62,000 miles on it.
The cruise control is not working and I am trying to troubleshoot the
problem. I have not previously had a car with cruise control so I have not
had to deal with any problems before. I have ordered the shop manual, but
it has not arrived yet. So, I wanted to relate the symptoms to find out if
anyone has a good idea what the problem is.

What is see is that when I turn on the Cruise Control main switch on the
Dashboard, the light located on the switch turns on, as does the indicator
on the dash. When I try to set the cruise or even select the resume/accell
button it does not work. I have checked the fuse and it is fine. However,
I changed it anyway and this did not help. Next, I disconnected the cruise
control connector under the hood and reconnected it after a few moments and
the cruise control worked for a short time. What I saw when it worked was
that when I depressed the main switch on the dash, the light on the switch
illuminated, but the indicator on the dash did not. The dash indicator only
illuminated when I set the cruise with the switch on the steering wheel and
it went out when the cruse was disengaged. I assume this is the way it is
supposed to work. This continued for about 5 minutes or less then stopped.

At one point, I disconnected the battery for 5 minutes (for another reason),
but the cruise worked after that for a short time the same way it had as I
described in the previous paragraph.

I am hoping it is just the switch on the steering wheel, but was not able to
get the cover off easily. I will work on that this weekend and try to check
the switches to see if they are faulty.

So, anyone have insight?

Paul, it sounds more like the switch on the brake pedal is tripping
because it's either defective, or out of adjustment. There's also an
inertia switch somewhere that kills the cruise if you're sailing through
some farmer's field instead of the interstate. :-)

Start by fixing the easiest and cheapest parts, then work your way up
the chain...

because it's either defective, or out of adjustment. There's also an
inertia switch somewhere that kills the cruise if you're sailing through
some farmer's field instead of the interstate. :-)

Start by fixing the easiest and cheapest parts, then work your way up
