2002 Odessey Transmission slipping

My wife made mention this morning of the car hesitating. While driveing it
in just a short while this afternoon, it happened to me twice. The first
seemed like a hesitation, but the second time it lagged so long (about 2 - 3
seconds) it felt more like the transmmission slipping (as if in neutral).
Anyone else had similar experience? Any ideas (other than take it to
Dealer)? Warranty is over as the van has 45K miles.

Check with your dealer. Honda has extended warranty on (I think) 99 to 02
Odyssey because of transmission failures. Lots of information on it on the
forum at ODYCLUB.COM.....

Nope. Only through 01. The 02 Odyssey transmission is wildly different
than the 99-01 models.

That being said, I sincerely doubt if Honda truly knows how to build a
modern automatic transmission. They seem to have met their match in
that. Disappointing.

Like I said, I'd use the 99-01 recall as ammunition and ask that Honda
handle this one similarly.

Had my auto tranny replaced under warranty at 28000 km on my 2002 odyssey.
Was slipping and setoff an check engine light as well. Standard warranty
covers engines and trannies up to 100000 km or 5 years in Canada. Im
surprised yours is not covered at 45000 milles.

Re: 2002 Odessey Transmission slipping

Today, my wife got me to check into the same problems she had noticed,
described here; slipping, and I'm having the exact same problem. I
managed to somehow get the check engine light to also come on. It went
off after a re-start. '99 LX, 28,800 miles. Have treated it like a
cream puff, and this is the thanks I get. Also noticed that
transmission fluid is leaking - two or three drops at each shut off
and that's about it. Also notice a whirring/like dirt in a bearing,
noise in park/neutral which goes away when in R or D. Just received
a letter in August from Honda extending the warranty to 100K mi. 7
Years. They said if your Odyssey exhibits any of these problems then
"call your Honda dealer".

Symptoms they noted in the letter you should call the dealer about:

"While driving, the D4 indicator on the instrument panel flashes"
"an abnormally loud noise from the transmission"
"Extremely slow or delayed gear engagement, upshifts, or downshifts"
"Abnormal gear slippage during upshifts or downshifts"
"Erratic or excessively harsh shifting"
"Automatic Transmission fluid (ATF) leaks".
