2004 Civic break noise
 

Hello.

My car a '04 Civic makes this 'clank' noise when I break the first time
going forward after I backed off (the drive way). It only makes this
noise once the first time, then it's OK. I was told by the Honda
mechanic that it's called "break pad shift" and it's normal ("Toyota's
make the same noise too", he added :-) ). It's hard for me to believe that.

What is your experience?

Normal? Maybe not normal, but a common occurance.

My 2001 does it with the current pads. My new 2005 Accord and Pilot both do
it. My 2001 stopped it with one set of pads. It's hit or miss for me
depending on how much play the pads have when installed. I use OEM pads.

I'm seeing a lot of complaints about it in various cars of various makes (I
frequent Acura, Volvo, Honda and Prius groups.) IIRC there are tricks that
can be done to quiet them, if you care that much.

I don't care that much about the noise, it's not that bad. It's just
that the car did not do that when it was new, it started making the
noise only after a while.

Also, I was puzzled to hear that it's "normal" especially when it comes
to Honda. All my previous cars, granted that there are not that many -
four, did not make this noise and all of them were much older then this
one.

I don't care that much about the noise, it's not that bad. It's just
that the car did not do that when it was new, it started making the
noise only after a while.

my 2004 LX sedan does exactly the same thing.
