2006 Civic Si DRL issue
 

Can anyone advise me of where I would find, and how I might identify the
part that controls the daytime running lights on this vehicle? Since I
got it for my wife new in '06, the passenger side DRL/high beam light
does not function properly - it does not come on, especially in cold
weather, until the car is driven for a while. On hot summer days it is
not an issue.

Any advice/suggestions?

My first suggestion would be to check if your warranty is still valid. Let
the dealer handle it and Honda pay for it.

Even if you're slightly out of warranty, there's a good chance you can
politely negotiate a "goodwill" warranty fix.

Why did you wait so long? Your car came with a 3 year/36000 mile
warranty. If you're out of warranty, and this has been happening all
along, shame on you.

You are absolutely right. We got it in the summer, so no issue (or at
least a minor one), I even changed the bulb twice chalking it up to a
bulb issue. The it was the usual procrastination coupled with a job
change and A LOT of commuting, so I was not looking for things to deal with.

That leaves me where I am today.

I appreciate any insight anyone might have on how the system works, what
controls it and where I might find the control(s). It appears thermally
related, so I will approach it as such once I have a clue where the
device is!

I'd still take it to the dealer and ask them to fix it. If they won't
cover it, try Honda America. It seems a shame to pay for parts for
something that never has worked right.

Other than that, I'd recommend getting the official shop repair
manual.

I have the same car, but I've never had any problems with it, so other
than being preachy, I have little of value to add for you... ;-)

Yeah, I will do both. I don't have a local Honda dealer where I live
now, another thing that made it an issue to address. I was hoping
someone had info on the system itself, but hey, we tried!

If my information is correct, the right high-beam wire should go directly
from the DRL module to the lamp itself.

If it's ONLY the right high beam, and if the right high-beam has problems
whether the headlamp switch is set to "on" or "off", then it's probably the
DRL control module itself, or there's a defect in that wire.

It's even possible you simply have a defective bulb.

You can try feeding battery voltage directly to the high-beam at the
headlamp connector (backprobe with a meter first to see what goes where!).
If the high-beam comes on immediately with direct battery voltage, then the
bulb is OK and the problem lies elsewhere.

If you're in the US, you can download the correct wiring diagrams and
troubleshooting for your car from Honda itself, very cheaply.

No idea, sorry. Honda puts them all over the place.

That DRL module is fairly pricey, something like $300 if I recall
correctly. You may want to investigate the bulb and wiring before you spend
money on the DRL module.

I can't figure out where you are geographically (Giganews masks that, and
you've been secretive), but I still think your best bet is to go to a Honda
(or Acura) dealer and try to get them to have Honda authorize a "goodwill"
warranty repair.

I believe "carfan85" is in Eastern Canada (as am I). Corrosion would
therefore be a distinct possiblity -- except that carfan85 has reported
that the problem has existed since the car was brand-new.

Carfan85 has said there is no Honda dealer within easy reach of him, but
leaving this expensive and warrantable problem untouched for THREE
WARRANTIED YEARS? It makes me wonder about the rest of the car...

Even most of those in the sticks of Alberta manage to make it to Edmonton
or Calgary at least once in three years. I'd say more about this, but I'd
end up being impolite, so I'd better not.
